Reflecting on the RFK #SuperBowlAd this morning, as both a #marketer and a #history enthusiast. I initially found it to be a stroke of genius, redoing the iconic JFK ad from the 60s (original below). It seemed to pay homage to his family legacy while offering a fresh perspective, akin to a Trump-esque 'Make America Great Again' message, albeit from a different vantage point. However, my perception shifted when I witnessed the backlash on social and the subsequent apology from RFK. It became apparent that while the ad may have resonated with those familiar with the campaign or history buffs like myself, its impact on the family's emotions was unforeseen, especially considering they were blindsided by its release. In the end, the real lesson that will live on in #marketing, #publicrelations, and #advertising textbooks for a different reason. Despite the considerable investment—reportedly $7M for the spot alone—the ROI appears dubious at best. The ad's polarizing reception underscores the importance of thorough audience research and sensitivity, lest the costs outweigh the benefits. Today is the day after superbowl Sunday and there will be many ‘best of, worst of’ lists on all the commercials that aired Let me just start by saying that crafting a Super Bowl commercial that truly stands out amidst the roar of competing ads is no easy feat. As marketers, we're faced with the daunting challenge of capturing attention, sparking emotion, and leaving a lasting impression—all within a mere 30 seconds or less. With the Super Bowl being one of the most-watched events globally, the stakes couldn't be higher. The pressure to deliver something memorable, shareable, and talked-about is immense. Now, some might question the rationale behind spending $7 million for a mere half-minute slot. But consider this: the Super Bowl isn't just a football game; it's a cultural phenomenon. It's a moment where brands have the undivided attention of millions of viewers—a captive audience of 150M primed for engagement. In that brief window, a well-crafted Super Bowl commercial has the potential to transcend mere advertising and become part of the cultural zeitgeist. It's an opportunity to connect with consumers on an emotional level, to tell stories that resonate, and to elevate brand perception. Sunday marked the 58th Super Bowl, a record-breaking event in terms of global viewing figures. In fact, the most for any U.S. telecast since Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the Moon in 1969. Whenever the NFL’s annual season climax comes around, I am always left intrigued by the significant opportunities it presents for brands to connect with consumers. Temu and Verizon accumulated over 60% of online conversations surrounding the Super Bowl’s ever-lengthy advertisement list. By utilising catchy, topical slogans and major celebrity partnerships, the pair dominated the social landscape, catapulting their brands into the limelight with around 65,000 mentions. It’s a testament to the power of smart advertisement. Verizon’s collaboration with Beyoncé will continue to be talked about for the foreseeable future, whilst others capitalised on the relevance of Taylor Swift’s appearance to drive engagement. Although an unfathomable scale to some, entrepreneurs and business owners of all organisational sizes should take great inspiration from the growth companies achieve at The Super Bowl. Second Chances. I was in London a few years ago, when I learned AE Marketing Group was losing a customer brand - I didn't love the decision, but it happens - that's the agency business. I gave their excutive team my word we would handle the transition professionally and went on with my vacation. Years go by and again I find myself overseas on the phone with one of the executives from that old customer brand. Only now she's the decision-maker and CMO at a new organization. And just like that, over a spotty phone connection and 17-hour time zone difference we had a second chance. Really good article on the conversation that is centered around why the Ad Agency industry has not progressed in Diversity. I absolutely love the work Nathan Shingleton and I created last year for the Young Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. The brief was to create a print ad to entice a young audience with careers in advertising. Our insight came from seeing large percentages of Gen-Z and Millennials aren’t sure what they want as a career, but know they want to make a difference and have a positive impact. By leaving the page almost completely empty we encourage our audience to take a moment and actually imagine a career in advertising. This idea could also translate to other formats, such as Social, TV, or OOH, as the abundance of blank space naturally captures attention and sparks the imagination. #advertising #marketing #creativity #print #Cannes
