Sharing Dunning Kruger in a moment of frustration. Working in general practice, I see people suffer through climate extremes and the Covid pandemic. Sometimes my tolerance gets tested. This time it ended in a sentence about boiling bats. 😩 We all have these testing moments. I have met thousands of people in my lifetime. I always try to remember 1. Health and science literacy in the community is variable. 2. Critical thinking is crucial when assessing a premise. This skill is not taught at school and should be to all students. ( this is a blanket statement- some schools do ). 3. Everyone has internal biases. Including me. 4. The complexities of people’s lives and experiences will colour their views. Always be open and listen. Building community takes patience and understanding. We need to build bridges. #climatehealthcrisis #protectnature #fossilfuelskill #cleanenergyfuture

As part of the Dept. and Tishk International University strategy is to focus on the the #17_Sustainable_Development_Goals (SDGs), my talk to the Medical Analysis Dept. staff in this regard, which are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership. I spoke with Jade Sasser about her new book, “Climate Anxiety and the Kid Question,” which explores the complex intersection of climate change and reproductive decisions. We discussed the importance of diversifying the conversation around climate emotions, understanding climate anxiety as a collective experience, the challenges faced by climate-concerned parents, and cultural pressures around having children. Sasser emphasizes the power of inclusive dialogue and emotional resilience as we navigate this uncertain future together. Her insights provide much-needed perspective on one of the most profound questions of our time. Advancing decarbonization efforts and energizing a greener tomorrow for my City of Lancaster, one hydrogen molecule at a time.
I am thrilled to have met with Los Angeles County Office of Education Superintendent Debra Duardo, MSW, EdD for an insightful discussion on a topic that touches us all deeply—the climate crisis. Because of the climate crisis: • Schools will need to respond to more emergencies and public health issues. • Schools will need to take steps to avoid education and services. • Modifications will be needed to many existing and future school facilities for them to be more climate-resilient and sustainable. • Fiscal impacts on schools will incur more than ever. To ensure our schools are safe, resilient, and adaptive to the changes our planet is facing, urgent climate action is needed. I am excited about the potential collaborations and initiatives that could emerge from this dialogue. Together, we can make a significant difference in creating not only a sustainable future but also a thriving future for our next generations. #ClimateAction #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #Education #LACOE #LosAngelesCounty #Sustainability

Recent University of Massachusetts Amherst research highlights yet another cost of poverty: bad roads. The study, published in in Scientific Reports, found that disadvantaged "environmental justice" (EJ) communities in Massachusetts have poorer road quality, requiring residents to use more fuel for their vehicles as a result. EJ communities are defined by MassDOT based on low-income status, high percentage of minority makeup, or low rates of English fluency. Previous research has shown that these communities are exposed to more emissions, have higher rates of asthma, and have lower property values. The latest UMass research shows that 21% of EJ communities also have poor road quality, compared to only 10% of non-EJ communities. Education and #climatechange are deeply interlinked, much as this relationship is overlooked. Millions of students face school closures and learning disruptions due to extreme weather events. The need of the hour is for policymakers to prioritize #climateadaptation within the education sector, citing evidence of declining learning outcomes and future earning potential. Suggestions for action include investing in school infrastructure, implementing innovative solutions to mitigate heat stress, and fostering #climateresilience among students and teachers. Swift action is required to ensure a climate-resilient education system, as the consequences of inaction will disproportionately affect future generations. Can climate change affect children's learning and cognition? According to a report by the EPA, the answer is a resounding yes. The report outlines the numerous risks that climate change poses to early academic achievement and lifelong socioeconomic mobility. It's crucial that we take action to mitigate these risks and ensure that future generations have the opportunity to thrive. This raises the question: How can we integrate this awareness into enhancing rural school conditions in Costa Rica? #ClimateChange #Education #ChildDevelopment #EPA #CAFE2024 #costarica
