Two years ago, we asked Chicago business leaders to publicly commit to advance racial equity by re-thinking business policies and practices one year after George Floyd’s murder. Twenty-five companies responded and 5/25 Move to Action was born.   Firms such as Mesirow and others have taken meaningful action to change business practices in a way that will create a more equitable region. Chicago has a history of civic leadership and engagement that is the envy of most other cities. Working individually and together, Chicago’s businesses have the potential to create a more dynamic, prosperous region, where the economy is growing, opportunity is increasing and equitably shared, and personal and public safety are the norm.   While this represents an inspiring start, we need to think bigger about the role of the business community in creating the region to which we all aspire. Huge S/O to Raphael Sofoluke and the entire team behind #UKBBShow and #UKBBWeek – what a success! The lineup was on point 🎯, and Steven Bartlett closing talk was insightful as expected! Here are some key takeaways from the event: 🧠 Fear of failure and limiting beliefs can even affect seemingly successful leaders. Some even felt guilty about their financial success. Unshakable self-belief is a superpower. 💎 Self-care, resilience, and #mentalfitness are crucial for black business owners facing additional challenges. (IMO we need to be careful with the “work twice as hard” narrative. Recipe for burnout.) 💎 Many are breaking barriers and scaling up; we should support and invest in them. 💎 Innovative use of AI to tackle economic challenges by some businesses is impressive. ❌ Access to networks and funding remains challenging for many in the black community. ❌ Hiring highly skilled talent and creating a motivating #workplaceculture are common struggles. 💎There's lots of room for professional leadership coaches and mentors to support black business owners as they scale up. 💎 A shift towards utilising the gig economy and freelance staff on a global scale. It was a fantastic event that not only reconnected people but also informed and inspired us all! 🙌🏿 #BlackExcellence #Entrepreneurship
