Here's the harsh reality: Many men struggle in silence, trapped in outdated notions of masculinity. But there's hope yet! Here are practical, actionable ways to alleviate depression: 1️⃣ Open dialogue: Break the silence. Encourage conversations about mental health in your circles. 2️⃣ Seek professional help: Therapy isn't a sign of weakness; it's a step towards empowerment. 3️⃣ Build a support network: Connect with others who understand and can offer a listening ear. And whilst we have you, here are some signs to help spot depression in others: • Notice changes in behaviour or mood. • Pay attention to withdrawn or isolated tendencies. • Look for signs of hopelessness or excessive guilt. It's time to redefine strength, not as the absence of vulnerability, but as the courage to face and heal emotional battles. It is mental health awareness week, and I think the best thing I can offer is my contribution to breaking the stigma. I have struggled with my mental health for about 40 years. I pretty much fell apart in my teens and didn't make any real progress until age 26, when I was diagnosed with depression. After 13 years of stuggling with finding antidepressants that helped, that was upgraded to Bipolar 2. It is, thankfully, pretty much under control now. When I was younger it completely dominated my life, now it's just another issue to be managed. If you are on the early stages of this path - new diagnosis, figuring out what treatment might work - you can definitely make it. It probably won't be easy, but it will be worth it. If I can give you any advice, it's this: ask for help, ask for support. It is too hard trying to do this on your own. And remember that it's just one part of you you are, it doesn't define you.
