What can explain abusive practices in childbirth? In our latest publication: "Unmasking the Role of Dehumanization in Obstetric Violence”, we explore the increasingly recognized issue of obstetric violence, where women encounter abusive behavior from healthcare professionals during childbirth. Despite growing awareness, research on the psychological factors driving this violence is still scarce. We propose that dehumanization—treating a person as less than human—is a key mechanism underlying obstetric violence, and highlight four mechanisms contributing to dehumanization in obstetrics and gynecology: 1. The medicalization of birth, reducing it to a mere medical process. 2. The emphasis on women’s reproductive functions, overshadowing their individuality. 3. Stereotypes portraying mothers as inherently self-sacrificing. 4. The belief that a healthy baby is the sole outcome that matters. We also discuss maintaining factors and suggest potential interventions to mitigate this form of gender-based violence. Impressive research about virtual doula care. We already know in-person doula care is evidenced-based and reduces adverse outcomes. This study demonstrates that same care delivered virtually is also beneficial, particularly for women of color. With more and more states mandating that Medicaid cover doula care, I see this virtual option as imperative to support women in maternity care deserts (36% of all US counties, by March of Dimes' last report.) I applaud and support all the studies coming from players in the digital women's health space! When we invest in women's health, we see better outcomes, and the solutions are usually simpler than we expect.

Identifying and treating the causes of hypertension is vital, especially in children as they may develop further health complications in adulthood. Recent research by Dr. Janis Dionne, an investigator at BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute, suggests that almost half of the children with secondary hypertension may be caused by a kidney-related complication rather than family history or obesity. Kidney ultrasounds seemed to be effective for determining the underlying causes of hypertension, but they’re not currently recommended for children over the age of six. Dionne’s team is using these findings to inform a new clinical pathway, which will aim to recommend more appropriate tests for children with hypertension while reducing the number of unnecessary tests and associated health-care costs.
