Gambling Disorder is a common problem in the US military with an estimated prevalence rate ranging from 0.06% - 68.6%...
Our Military Research Associates, Tim Boos, Mark Lucia, and Dr. Nathan D. Smith, analyzed how well the DoD and its branches are implementing the Government Accountability Office's (GAO) recommendations on gambling disorder policies. Their research highlights critical preventative measures and policy enforcement gaps across military branches. These researchers found that:
👉 Military policies are intended to guide non-medical military personnel to help their service members.
👉 The policy updates from the DoD and its branches show an underestimation of how detrimental gambling disorder can be.
👉 The lack of depth addressing GD within military policies appears to downplay the negative impact GD can have.
👉 The Coast Guard is the only branch that met all the recommendations set forth by the GAO
