The 2024 Summer Associate Program has wrapped. The Summers worked on substantive matters and had a front row seat alongside our lawyers and clients. Over 100 partners and associates mentored and trained the Summers and spent time getting to know them through hand-on experience, trainings, receptions, social outings, and even a White House tour. We are looking forward to welcoming them back to the firm!

Critical to have the one on one partner mentor and associate liason. A firm with a real interest in the summer student will have 20 minutes with the partner every day and at least a one hour session every week. Every summer student interested in business law should be on two deal teams at all times. Show you care.
We are thrilled to welcome our 2024 class of summer associates to the firm this week! Across our U.S. offices, Davis Polk’s summer associates will contribute to real client work, be mentored by a partner and an associate liaison, and complete immersive training programs, among many other valuable professional experiences. They will also enjoy an active calendar full of fun cultural and social events. We look forward to a fantastic summer!

I'll be honest, I don't know if this is typical or not - my gut says no - but this is clearly a company that truly believes each of those people is part of the San Francisco 49ers team. They don't play on the field, but this shows these individuals that you believe their work helped the team accomplish its goals. And while I could be wrong, something tells me they do more things like this that we don't hear about. #teamwork #leadership #teamdevelopment #culture

This is a great example of inclusive organizational #leadership! While it’s not always possible to fly every FTE to every event, I applaud the 49ers for setting an example here — especially in the era of hyper-segmentation and favoritism amongst teams. Finding a way to acknowledge the contribution of all employees, whenever possible, goes a long way toward reducing silos, decreasing intra-office resentment, creating healthy workplace culture, and motivating folks to do their best work. #Superbowl #inclusion #culture #belonging

Similar mindset to turning over rocks to find the best opportunities in the market.
We hosted a scavenger hunt through Grand Central for our summer interns, who worked together in this game of strategy and communication to solve clues in the passages, concourses, tracks and trains.

Make your summer associate part of the team. The tendency is to give your summer associate one-off assignments. Research this isolated legal issue for my case. Or do this non-billable project that I've been waiting all year for someone to work on. Your summer associate can't file an appearance, and they're not qualified to do a lot of litigation tasks. So how can you make them feel like a full team member on your case? Easy. Just talk to them about the case. Whenever you see them. Or whenever there's a new development. They probably have insights you haven't thought of. And even if not, the work is so much more rewarding when they feel like part of the team. And don't stop the conversation when the summer is over. If your summer associate is local, take them out to lunch during the year and catch them up on your cases. If they're out of town, stay in touch however you like to. It's my 11-year anniversary of being a summer associate, and I'm still at the only firm I've ever known. Because they did things like this. They made me and kept me part of the team.
