There are two main types of downside protection that can be put on a structured note, with subsets of each: - Buffers - Barriers Buffers give a set level of protection at the maturity of a note regardless of where the worst performing underlier is at. In a traditional buffer, if you have a note with a 20% buffer and at maturity the worst performing is down 23% you are only down 3%. You have a fixed level of protection. Barriers are different than buffers in the way that they offer protection at maturity so long as you have not breached the protection levels. If you have a 30% barrier and you are down 28% at maturity you get back your full principal back. If you are down 32% at maturity, then you only get back 68% of principal.
