This week I want to call to the US Trans Survey, completed in 2022. They surveyed 92,329 people who fell under the transgender umbrella, of which 43% of the respondents were under 24 years old. From their study: "More than three-quarters of adult respondents (80%) and nearly two-thirds of 16- and 17-year-old respondents (60%) who were out or perceived as transgender in K-12 experienced one or more form of mistreatment or negative experience, including verbal harassment, physical attacks, online bullying, being denied the ability to dress according to their gender identity/expression, teachers or staff refusing to use chosen name or pronouns, or being denied the use of restrooms or locker rooms matching their gender identity." https://lnkd.in/eEKGQ3gH #CT302KU

Understanding #GenderSensitization: A Student’s Perspective Konda Garry Matthews, a Kautilya School of Public Policy student, delves into the crucial topic of gender sensitization. In a society where #genderinequalities persist, it’s essential to uproot the social constructs that fuel such issues. Gender sensitization isn’t just about recognizing the need for change but fundamentally transforming societal perceptions and behaviours. It aims to eliminate gender-based evils like sexual assault and #domesticviolence, creating a more equitable society. To address this, #education plays a pivotal role. Starting from adolescence, there should be a holistic approach to teaching about gender differences especially on socio-emotional grounds, and #socialrealities. This education should continue into undergraduate studies, emphasizing legal frameworks like the POCSO Act. By instilling respect and sensitivity in young minds, we can pave the way for a future where gender-based violence is a thing of the past. This is a popular discourse on gender in education that does less to reimagine a gender equal learning environment and do more to displace women teachers at times. ⚠ 1 DAY LEFT ⚠ There is one day left to respond to the consultation on the Government's draft guidance for schools on gender questioning students. Schools need practical guidance about supporting trans and gender questioning pupils to ensure they are able to support all students to thrive. The draft guidance does not do that. There is no evidence that TGQ children present a risk to other children; that most children feel threatened by or concerned about their peers who are TGQ; or that the presence of a child who is TGQ impacts those around them. Brook wants to see all young people being recognised, celebrated and supported. For this to be a reality, schools need guidance that is young person-centred, evidence-based and draws on the expertise of teachers who are already successfully supporting and safeguarding trans students. RSHE can play an important role in normalising this diversity and ensuring that no pupil feels pressured into an identity, gender expression or sexuality that is not authentic for them. We urge as many people as possible to respond to the consultation before 11.59pm on 12 March to help shape a resource for schools that is both practical and respectful.  We recommend looking at the guidance from Stonewall and Allsorts Youth Project for more detailed information on how to respond. https://lnkd.in/eTtfwqds
