I am thrilled to announce that I have successfully completed the Oncology Pharmacy course. This program has provided me with advanced knowledge and practical skills essential for effectively managing oncology patients and their complex medication regimens. Throughout the course, I gained in-depth insights into several critical topics, including: - Chemotherapy preparation and dosage calculations - Adjusting chemotherapy doses based on lab results - Outpatient and inpatient handling of oncology patients - Patient education and comprehensive medication history taking - Managing chemotherapy-induced complications and providing supportive care - Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT) protocols and procedures - Identifying and categorizing medication errors in oncology settings - Understanding different types of emesis and utilizing various anti-emetic medications - Categorizing intravenous and oral chemotherapy medications based on their emetogenic potential I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Dr. Nada Adel for her exceptional guidance and instruction throughout this course. I am excited to apply the knowledge and skills gained from this course to the practical field and contribute meaningfully to the healthcare industry. #OncologyPharmacy #PharmaceuticalCare #Chemotherapy #PatientCare #MedicationSafety #ProfessionalDevelopment

Some interesting takeaways: 1. Pharmacists at Mayo are scoped to assess some patients independently and sign cycle 2 or later chemotherapy 2. We should continue to change practice models based on patient needs, technology, and ability to get support for certain tasks (e.g. financial navigation)
HOPA Past President Scott A. Soefje, PharmD, MBA, BCOP, FCCP, FHOPA, had an enlightening discussion with Pharmacy Times about the role of the Oncology Pharmacist: https://lnkd.in/gmtxhE5z

Focusing on the KPIs That Matter: Tips and tricks for selecting and influencing the factors that will drive your practice to provide higher quality care As business administrators working in hematology/oncology, our mission should always be to provide the highest quality care to as many patients as possible. Let's give a standing ovation to our unsung heroes: community oncology pharmacists! While academic medical centers often steal the spotlight for their pharmacy integration (and often big marketing budgets), it's high time we acknowledge the colossal impact oncology pharmacists have in community practices After all, the majority of oncology care unfolds right in these very settings, making their potential impact nothing short of monumental The team at McKesson (Melissa Carroll, Shannon Hough, et al) have published an analysis of the impact and value of integrating a 0.5 FTE remote clinical oncology pharmacist in four community practices in their network And the results are mind blowing 🤯 Over 1 year: 🔎 5716 order reviews were completed 🙋♀️ intervention rate of 57% - most common were: interventions with clinical impact on the patient (36%), dose rounding (35%) and therapeutic interchange (30%) 💰 interventions improved the practice margins by $1,455,033 and reduced total medication costs by $5,962,551 🔄 average return on investment was 415% (range 100–915%) This is from 4 part-time FTEs… 😲 A lot of cost savings stemmed from the simple yet powerful act of dose rounding - a skill that every pharmacist can wield from day one So, let's raise the curtain and applaud our community oncology pharmacists who are tirelessly working behind the scenes, making major impacts for oncology patients across every practice setting 👏👏👏👏👏 --- 📌 When you’re ready to prioritize learning oncology, the Enjoy Learning Oncology (ELO) program can help you! Congratulations are in order again for our specialty pharmacy team! 🎉 🙌 https://bit.ly/4ceC70v Their clinical outcomes study and poster, “Maximizing Cost Savings: The Impact of Specialty Pharmacist Interventions at a Community Oncology Center,” won the ✨ Gold Award ✨ for best poster at Pharmacy Quality Alliance's Annual Meeting. The study describes the valuable relationship between HSSP patient management and cost containment. In fact, the authors found pharmacist interventions have helped to save a total of $700,503 in just several years. It's the second time the research has won top honors. Just six months ago, the study earned the Best Poster award at National Association of Specialty Pharmacy (NASP). Authors Casey Fitzpatrick, Carly Giavatto, PharmD, Ana Lopez-Medina, PharmD, Jessica Mourani Doueiry say the study's impact could be far-reaching: "As value-based healthcare delivery models become more of the norm, interventions like these will be vital for showing the value of the HSSP." Bravo! 👏 #pharmacy #specialtypharmacy #healthcare #healthcarecosts #oncology
