While I was working in executive search, I helped a number of family-owned companies hire Chief Financial Officers – and now, here at CBIZ, I advise our family-owned clients on making these hires...and the challenge they often have in attracting and retaining strong talent is that they rarely include a long-term incentive plan as part of their compensation packages. When building a leadership team, CEOs of recently acquired businesses often struggle to find the right finance leader. Typically, the CEO is an MBA and pretty strong on strategic finance but weak on daily accounting and budgeting, creating financial controls and day-to-day management of net working capital and cash. Mistakes I have seen: -Replacing the current finance team too early before knowing what you actually need -Hiring a high level leader who wants to think about capital allocation, investors and banks and not the day-to-day management of net working capital, financial reporting, budgeting, and financial controls What works: -Taking 6-12 months to assess finance needs, often relying on a fractional CFO in the meantime -Hiring a hands on leader who fills CEO’s gaps #hiring #smbsuccess #smallbusinessowner #eta #fractionalCFO
