New research from CTS and The Civil Rights Project/Proyecto Derechos Civiles at UCLA explores the obstacles of recruiting and retaining Teachers of Color and Indigenous Teachers (TOCIT) in California schools. Despite California’s recent, large investments toward improving educator diversity, persistent high rates of burnout, turnover, and early retirement among TOCIT reveal that other factors are at play. We interviewed teachers and system leaders to understand the current policies and practices in place that contribute to these alarming statistics. Researchers found persistent discrimination and racism in teacher training processes and school working environments, disproportionate economic barriers, and limited access to educational, professional, and other supports needed to become and thrive as a teacher. Summer is over for teachers, meaning a return to the classroom. Or perhaps not. Many teachers did not just leave the classroom for the summer — they’re leaving the profession entirely. Dr. Alexander Rohrer, DSocSci, Community School Director at Burrowes ES, shares a column with LNP on teacher burnout and attrition in Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania’s teacher attrition rates hit record highs in recent years, with 6.7% of teachers leaving in 2023-24. In Lancaster County, the rate stands at 6.3%, with teachers of color facing the highest turnover rates. The primary culprit? Burnout. With teachers wearing many hats—from educators to security personnel—demands are soaring. To address this crisis, communities must rally to support teachers, reduce demands, and foster connections to reignite the passion that brought them into the classroom. #Education #communityaction #community

Teachers are leaving America's public schools in droves. School board members can do something about it. Here's how: Many admin do not support teachers: "Limited support from administrators with student behavior pushed [one teacher] to leave his job teaching.... 'I was a ninth-grade teacher and my students were 7th graders emotionally,' he said. 'I felt like I didn’t even get to teach.'" School boards can: 1. Get full access to school discipline policies and records of enforcement. 2. Enact a "no nonsense" discipline policy. 3. Hold administrators accountable for poor discipline in their schools. Teachers and students deserve better.
Why Teachers Are Still Leaving the Profession

The primary challenge of rural school districts lies in the recruitment of well-qualified teachers who are willing to reside in rural areas. When assessing teacher salaries against the cost of living, there is a natural inclination for educators to seek regions where salaries are competitive and living expenses are lower. Moreover, for individuals in their twenties, the allure of metropolitan areas like Phoenix, Tempe, Mesa, or even destinations like San Diego may overshadow the appeal of living in more rural settings such as Eastern Arizona and places similar. The importance of rural school districts to cultivate and nurture their young scholars to become teachers and return home is every more important.
