Earlier this week, I chaired a panel for one of Paul Hamlyn Foundation's Teacher Development Fund (TDF) cohorts, all of whom are working on primary arts practice teacher development projects. One of the central strands of their work is to address inequities for children and build anti-racist practices into the heart of their projects.
Having previously heard from a range of experts to better understand the nature of educational inequities and some of the possible components of anti-racist practice, participants arrived to hear from Kirsty Cooper, Michelle McGrath, and Tyreis Holder sharing their journeys with this work.
Once we begin to explore inequities in society, and more specifically in education, we will find it located everywhere. This can lead to a sense of overwhelm. It can seem impossible for the system to be changed from within. When there's a sense of powerlessness, any attempt towards change can feel hopeless. So, we ask, where to begin?
These starting points are based on themes that emerged during the panel discussion, my own novice learning and experiences, and are therefore far from exhaustive. Rather, these are a myriad of possibilities to demonstrate the agency we have to strive toward change: https://lnkd.in/eqHJApg6
Thank you to Kevina Khan for thoughtfully designing the session and to Greg Klerkx for hosting.

Recent discussions about the state of charter schools have underscored the importance of accurate information and advocacy. In a thought-provoking piece by Rick Hess, the complexities and challenges facing charter schools were illuminated. At 21Cobalt, we're committed to supporting charter schools in navigating these challenges and achieving their goals.
As highlighted by Nina Rees, the former president of the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools, the charter school movement faces both opportunities and obstacles. While charter schools have demonstrated significant momentum and academic impact, they also contend with political polarization and evolving educational landscapes.
At 21Cobalt, we recognize the vital role that charter schools play in our education system, and we're dedicated to providing comprehensive support to ensure their success. From governance support to operational assessments, grant management, and crisis support, our team offers tailored solutions to address the unique needs of charter schools.
With our expertise and commitment to excellence, we empower charter schools to thrive in an ever-changing environment. Let's work together to overcome challenges, seize opportunities, and drive positive outcomes for students and communities.

Access to education is a human right but for many children and young people around the world, this is not the case.
This week saw #InternationalDayOfEducation but we believe that strengthening #education systems is something we should be doing every day.

"Should 'Yale' or 'jail' change the way we see others?"
Six years ago today, this powerful question echoed through Jay Gillen's thought-provoking TEDx talk, where my early work was honored alongside the transformative power of youth-centered initiatives. Imagine a world where young voices aren't just heard, but amplified and compensated. Where youth don't just participate, but lead. This wasn't just a dream - it was our reality at the Baltimore Algebra Project (BAP).
At BAP, we didn't just teach - we mobilized. We didn't just learn - we negotiated. We didn't just hope for change - we agitated for it. Following the inspiring model of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), we turned passion into action.
Our achievements? They speak volumes:
- Managing $400,000+ in annual contracts with CSOs and government organizations
- Hosting the groundbreaking #FreeMindsFreePeople conference
- Overseeing $3 million in grants
- Leading nationwide demonstrations and school walk-outs
- Successfully halting the construction of a $100 million youth jail
But our true success wasn't measured in dollars or numbers. It was in the lives we touched, the systems we challenged, and the future we began to shape.
Today, that spirit of commitment to community, diversity, and justice burns brighter than ever. The lessons from BAP - peer-to-peer learning, youth-led initiatives, challenging societal norms - continue to guide my approach to creating change.
As we face global challenges, the need for youth leadership has never been greater. In education, community organizing, and policy-making, young voices are not just valuable - they're vital. Let's champion a future where every individual, regardless of background, can contribute meaningfully to their community. Where 'Yale' or 'jail' doesn't define potential. Where youth don't just have a seat at the table - they build the table.
Together, let's challenge assumptions, uplift young voices, and create a more equitable, just society. The power of youth is limitless. The time for change is now.

At Governors for Schools, it’s our mission to build exceptional boards. We believe those boards are stronger when we prioritise diversity – that's why it’s one of our aspirations for the sector.
Last year, 31% of our placed volunteers were from ethnic minority/global majority backgrounds. Additionally, 68% of all appointed volunteers were under the age of 45, bringing younger voices into school governance.
We will continue to proactively work with community groups and multicultural networks to inspire underrepresented groups to lend their perspective and knowledge to the wider talent pool.
If you feel passionately about the future of education, and ensuring that every voice is valued, we can support you to become a school governor: https://lnkd.in/eZyx3AKj
