Instead of waiting for specific assignments, I was able to familiarize myself with the office routines and the team’s needs. I observed the daily processes, offered to help with minor tasks, and proactively organized the filing system. I also took time to get to know my colleagues and understand their preferences for communication and support. Having a Virtual Assistant (VA) isn’t as extravagant as it might sound. Consider it along the same lines as having a cleaner who visits once a week, or a gardener, a childminder, or even a dog walker. All these professions have one thing in common: to make life easier by doing the things you don’t have the time or desire to do yourself. And that’s exactly what a VA does. It’s having someone in your corner and on hand to do the tasks you just don’t get time to do (or in all honesty you don’t want to do). And the best bit is, you don’t need to hire a VA full-time, just like you don’t hire a cleaner or a dog walker full-time, just hire one for the time you need, either for a few hours or on a monthly retainer. It’s ok to need help and it’s ok to put processes in place to make your life as easy as possible because life is too short to be filing invoices and keeping on top of your inbox full of junk emails that you just want rid of.
