Read our joint civil society statement on the official aid figures for 2023, released today   In absolute terms, Official Development Assistance (ODA, or aid) increased from 2022 to 223.7 billion USD. This represents 0.37% of OECD DAC members’ collective GNI (equally low as in 2022). However, the DAC Civil Society Reference Group (DAC/CSO RG) has major concerns about the underlying trends reflected in these figures. Through its ‘ODA modernisation process’ the DAC has significantly expanded the list of what can be considered as ODA. As a consequence, aid is moving away from its original purpose of achieving poverty eradication and economic welfare and now includes many controversial flows of funds and goods. Reporting the cost of hosting refugees as ODA - also known as in-donor refugee costs - is, once again, the main way donors are inflating their ODA, distorting the statistics and hence misrepresenting the real donor effort. In reality payments by donors to themselves. A serious and mature discussion on defintion of ODA (Aid) is needed! New blog on the role of role of community-based networks in strengthening the financial health of refugees and forcibly displaced. This year's European Microfinance Award puts the spotlight back on the topic of ‘Advancing Financial Inclusion for Refugees and Forcibly Displaced People (FDPs)’. It's been two years since we published our findings from the Finance in Displacement research. Amidst shifting global attention from one migration crisis to another, my thoughts often return to the refugees we interviewed in Jordan and Kenya. Many likely remain in their host countries, underlining a persistent need for improved access to both financial and social resources to nurture their livelihoods. There is much to learn from how informal social networks and Community-Driven Organisations (CDOs) serve as critical support pillars for FDPs, especially where humanitarian aid is limited and policies constrict economic freedoms for FDPs. New HHS study reveals the positive fiscal impact of refugees and asylees on the American economy! Over a 15-year period, these individuals have contributed almost $124 billion to the economy. Out this week, we have a new publication from the Refugee Economies Programme. Vittorio Bruni, Patrick Mutinda Muthui, Cory Rodgers and Olivier Sterck have co-authored the report ‘Refugee Debt and Livelihoods in Northern Kenya’, which looks at how debt is used as a coping strategy by refugees in Kakuma refugee camp and the Kalobeyei settlement, which, together, constitute one of the largest refugee camps in Africa. A few key points: ·      refugees remain highly dependent on humanitarian assistance; ·      87% of households are indebted to a food retailer; ·      debt levels have increased dramatically since 2019; ·      lack of livelihood opportunities, low levels of assistance, increasing prices, aid delays, aid cutbacks, and shocks all play a role in the creation and continuation of debt; ·      implicit interest rates push refugees into a debt trap. Our current approach to forced migration is wrong.... We clearly need a new approach starting proactively at the root causes and based on relocation and burden sharing. Most displaced people are internally displaced within a country and those who become refugees by crossing an international border are often located in countries that cannot support them. My proposal is that a refugee is “anyone in acute or foreseeable need of refuge” and to start from this point. See: https://lnkd.in/d3DKhVBJ

A new study reveals $124 Billion positive fiscal impact of refugees and asylees on U.S. economy 📈    The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE) released a groundbreaking report, "The Fiscal Impact of Refugees and Asylees at The Federal, State and Local Levels From 2005-2019."
