Oxford #schoolshooting investigation cites failures of the #Superintendent and his Assistant Superintendents for Student Services in five areas impacting #schoolsafety. The areas include failing to communicate the #threatassessment policy to #principals, failure to adopt guidelines, failure to train, failure to insure threat assessment teams were in place at each school, and failure to ensure suicide intervention guidelines were in place. "most of these (students) leaving early are not dangerous, but those committing mass shootings will more probably than not be found in this cohort. Therefore all students leaving K 1-12 or any college need debriefing." Use this investigative report constructively by investing in School Nursing, counseling and early warning systems like Awareity Program. Of course, that costs money, and tragically, not enough kids have been shot yet to actually budget for early detection of vulnerable kids most likely to commit mass violence. Most school shooters leave school for one reason or another; so, at least debrief all students leaving school prematurely. Of course, most of these leaving early are not dangerous, but those committing mass shootings will more probably than not be found in this cohort.

Preparing for this situation below is part of our operational strategy. Whether it be a power outage, active shooter situation, medical emergency, etc. we have protocols and processes. But it’s not enough to have processes written in a manual. Ongoing training and practice is critical to preparation and execution. These physical trainings are part of our onboarding process and are scheduled throughout the year to ensure we know exactly what to do in each situation and remain calm. Exactly why here in Idaho we have worked so hard as a collective group to implement standardized school safety protocols (ISCRS - Idaho Standard Command Response for Schools). We need consistency in our program/training when it comes to safety for all students and staff no matter where we are in the state. Recently Utah has passed a bill and significant funding to standardize school safety programming and improve the safety of facilities. At a Colorado Association of School Executives session today led by The Colorado Education Initiative, we read letters from students who had been referred to truancy court. One striking fact that came out of the conversation was that students in their letters almost always acknowledge - and never dismiss - the importance of going to school. But it's anxiety, fear, the struggle to catch up, and more that keeps them away. This is why we do the work we do at SchoolStatus: relieve districts of the burdens of attendance management processes, and help cultivate student/family positivity about attendance. We do this so that district teams can focus on meeting those individual students' needs and getting them back on track toward their personal academic goals. #k12 #attendance
