“Social housing is the only policy area where you can be 100% eligible for a government service and never receive it. And that's the reality for the majority of people who are now on the waiting list in NSW - they will never receive a home because there’s so much demand,” says Rebecca Pinkstone in conversation with Philip Oldfield at the James Martin Institute for Public Policy event on Affordable and Accessible Housing. If the waiting list is “only a demonstration of housing market failure”, what is core to the change she plans to lead as inaugural CEO of Homes NSW? “We need to get back to basics - we need to build more public housing, we need to support Community Housing Providers who are like-minded and values aligned to deliver more housing. And we need to look at different models that can leverage institutional investment to grow affordable and key worker housing,” she said. “But at its core, we are going to need government to be that backbone, and they need to step up to deliver more social homes on the ground.” #housingcrisis #buildsocialhousing #affordablehousing

To all well established Social Housing Landlords in England, are you aware how much supported housing will be needed by 2040? We need 167,329 more supported homes by 2040. The development cost of providing 167,329 more supported homes is £33.9bn by 2040. Support costs would be £3.4bn per year by 2040, which may be £1.2bn more than 2024, a 58% increase. 500. That's the amount of affordable homes being built per year in Edinburgh 😶 The issue is there's a gap in funding. The other issue is that there's 24,000 people in Edinburgh waiting for an affordable home. This is why we do what we do 🏗 We want to help fight these figures and provide as many homes for individuals in need as we can 🏡 We: 🏚 Acquire homes that we can complete a full refurbishment on to a high standard 🛋 Furnish these throughout 🔐 Hand over to C~urb PSL for a fixed term of three or five years 💙 Give back homes to our local community to make a real social difference. It’s positive to see the new Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities report recognise the considerable financial pressures facing housing associations which have inevitably led to a reduction in plans for urgently needed new affordable homes. Report 📄: https://lnkd.in/dMnmfYUk We welcome the recommendations which echo our calls for funding and a clear target for how many social rent homes need to be built each year; as well as calls for housing associations to have equal access to building safety funding. To fix the housing crisis we need a #PlanForHousing with funding for a generation of new social housing.

One of our borough missions is to tackle the housing crisis head on. We are developing a local response to the national housing crisis - but we must be realistic. We cannot solve it alone. 🏡 🧱 Housing associations provide over 17,500 homes in the borough, a significant proportion of which are affordable. Our new Housing Compact plan outlines how we will work with over 30 housing associations, to improve the supply, quality and service standards of social landlords in Waltham Forest. Last week our Housing Compact Partners met to discuss the borough’s housing priorities, and how we can tackle the challenges that the borough faces. 40% living at home… #dwellr we are glad with the Housing Commission's recommendation for the Irish government to establish private funds to assist in housing funding. This excellent article brings out the urgent need which we are trying to do our part to resolve. A significant increase in employed young people aged 25-34 still living at home in Ireland, now at 40% has to be resolved. Many can’t afford a new home. There’s an excessive focus on new homes ignoring those in older homes already built. Incorporating #dwellr type, and its peers lease-to-own schemes into this solution, the government can help individuals to move from renting to more affordable homeownership at less cost to the exchequer. The Housing Commission's proposal is to balance tenant and landlord rights in the private rental sector which aligns with the need to supplement schemes such as HAP, FHS etc. However, the problem is these exclude second hand homes. By integrating lease-to-own schemes into these initiatives, the government can empower tenants who can’t afford new homes to secure stable housing options and work towards homeownership, fostering a more inclusive and sustainable housing market for all. That’s what #dwellr is about. We have tried to get before Government to assist but no luck so far
