While only a few people get time off work for today, #Juneteenth should truly be a holiday for everyone. I think this is the most important holiday in the United States and should have been implemented sooner. Juneteenth is a celebration of the beginning of the end of one of America's most problematic aspects in its history, something that we all should celebrate and meditate on.
For those unaware of its importance, Juneteenth is celebrated to "commemorate the ending of #slavery in the United States. The holiday's name is a portmanteau of the words "June" and "nineteenth", as it was on June 19, 1865, when Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the American Civil War. Although this date commemorates enslaved people learning of their freedom under the Emancipation Proclamation, this only applied to former Confederate states. There remained legally enslaved people in states that never seceded from the Union. These people did not gain their freedom until the ratification of the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution on December 6, 1865."
Of course, the freedom gained that day did not change the USA quickly and it took until the Civil Rights movement of the 60s for black Americans to start gaining the equal rights and respect they deserved. And that also did not change this country quickly.
