🚀LEVEL UP YOUR KNOWLEDGE: Everyday Ethics: Developing and Maintaining Individual and Agency Ethics with Dr. Jeff Fox, PhD As a professional in criminal justice, we are used to the “letter of the law”: things are legal, or they are illegal. They’re right, or they’re wrong. But just like life, sometimes things fall into “grey areas.” And that’s the realm of ethics. Ethics goes beyond the black letter law and helps us to set a standard of how we ought to be, and how we should strive to perform in our personal and professional lives. While ethics can feel like a huge ever confusing topic, it doesn’t have to be – especially when you have a framework to help you in your decision-making process. This course is specifically designed to examine ethical behavior in public safety and criminal justice organizations. We will examine what ethics means and various ways ethics is thought of and used in everyday life, with particular focus on the situations that criminal justice professionals find themselves in. We will examine ethical responsiveness (or lack thereof) and ethical approaches in public safety issues. We will also look at organizational responsibility, accountability, and liability. We examine personal accountability, responsibility, obligation, and duty. Finally, we’ll explore how we develop and maintain both individual and organizational ethics. If you have ever looked at or experienced a situation where you felt there were a lot of “shades of grey” in the decision-making process… then this course is for you. 👉Click Here to Register for this Online Course https://lnkd.in/gvhmfiQy #ethics #criminaljustice #publicsafety #lawenforcement #firstresponders

Thank you to everyone who attended Part 1 of our 2-part professional development series on Ethics. Don’t forget to register for Part 2, ‘A Relational Ethics Primer’ with Dr. Simon Nuttgens, R. Psych, on May 9, 2024 12:00-1:00 pm. This presentation will introduce a relational approach to counseling ethics, complementing the traditional principle-based ethics. While principle-based ethics relies on established principles like beneficence and autonomy, relational ethics emphasizes an ongoing attunement to how we should engage with clients throughout the entire counseling relationship. Unlike principle-based ethics, which is often invoked in crises, relational ethics advocates for a continuous, moment-to-moment ethical presence in all aspects of client interactions. Professional Development is free for ACTA members (check your email for the code) and is $75 for non-members. Register at https://lnkd.in/gbwjdiRa.

Puerto Rico, the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico Canons of Professional Ethics is a valuable resource that I think should be more readily accessible to the public. I believe that it is important for non-attorneys to have a firm understanding of the appropriate conduct of attorneys so that we don't fall victim to "Gaslighting" with false narratives. Given recent events, I took particular interest in reading Canons 19, 20, and 21. Canon 19: "The lawyer should always keep his client informed about every important issue which arises in the development of the case which has been entrusted to him." Canon 20: "A lawyer shall not withdraw from employment until he has taken reasonable steps to avoid prejudice to his client’s rights, such as due notice to his client, advising him properly about the need to employ another counsel when necessary; allowing him time to employ another counsel; advise him as to the date due for any term at law, which might affect his cause of action or for the filing of any petition, which might benefit him… " and "Upon withdrawing from a case the lawyer shall deliver to his client, the record and all papers in connection with the case…" Canon 21: "The lawyer has the obligation to represent his client with complete loyalty. This duty includes the obligation to disclose to the client all the circumstances of his relations to the parties and to third persons, and any interest in the controversy which might influence the client in the selection of counsel. No lawyer should accept employment when his professional judgment might be affected by his personal interests." and "When a lawyer represents a client by recommendation of another person or group who pays the lawyer for said service, he should withdraw from the representation of both as soon as a situation of conflicting interests arises between the person or group who pays his fees and the person whom he represents." https://lnkd.in/eRFPyHAV
