In 2016 I was working at Crunchyroll, trying to help the team launch VRV (a bundled streaming app) under the leadership of Quincy Carroll. At one point, he encouraged all of the team leads to participate in a little group activity, whereby we were all pulled into a room to have some conversations around efficiency and collaboration. I won't bore you with the details, suffice to say that the output was a key insight for me: as much as the tech industry would like to pretend otherwise, building products is an assembly line of sorts, and the assembly line can only see gains in efficiency when one step of the process sets up the next step for success. In other words, the more pre-work a person can do to set their peers up for success, the easier a time that next person in the assembly line will have. Doing so requires we all become familiar with the work of our peers, such that we can set one another up for success instead of pretending we all operate in little silos with our only concern being the singular outputs we're judged upon. It's knowing that the next step in the assembly line is tightening a screw, and so you place the screw in its place to prime the next step for a faster job, even though it's "not your job" to do it. This spirit of collaboration and mutual support is something that is, ironically, rare in business. I say it's ironic because modern business is all about efficiency, productivity, and increased outputs. We can see all of these ideas flourish if only we collaborate and can understand the work and needs of our peers across departments and across jobs, but so often we do the exact opposite—we centralize our gaze onto our own needs, concerns, and data points. Siloing, in a nutshell. I share this story because I believe it's a great symbol representing what's at the heart of modern Design organizations. Design is a powerful connector between departments because it can lead with empathy and understanding. Design can help prime the next steps for partner success and enable new frontiers to be discovered and explored. We only need to be working for a business that values and encourages collaboration.
