"So, did you vote Yes or No?" It was a question posed by a family member over Christmas lunch. I quickly realised that we were on opposing sides of the debate. The conversation was courteous if not one-sided - I did have a Christmas lunch to eat. But neither of us had to worry that we had a difference of opinion. Neither of us had to fear that there would be consequences for believing different things. But this week, Open Doors released their 2024 World Watch List report, showing that 365 million people around the world, do have reason to fear. 1 in 7 Christians - an increase of 5 million from 2023 - have faced discrimination and persecution because of what they believe. Whether you are a person of faith or not, we all believe in the freedom of religion. The freedom to believe what you want to believe. As our CEO reminded us, the 'Jedi' religion as an option on the census highlights that freedom each time we complete it. But millions of Christians around the world, don't experience that freedom. 5,000 Christians were killed last year because of what they believed. The death toll was likely much higher with so many killings going unreported or deliberately hidden. And this discrimination is happening in our own backyard. The rate of persecution and discrimination against Christians is the highest in Asia where 2 in 5 Christians are suffering. There was a nine-fold increase in the number of Indian Christians killed, with attacks on churches and Christian schools spiralling from 67 last year to 2,228 this year. Hebrews 13.3 encourages us to, 'Remember...those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.' Especially for those with the Christian faith, we can't ignore what is happening to our brothers and sisters around the world. We must remember them and pray for them.

Yes! And what does this mean for how we teach health class in #CatholicSchools? I suggest bringing disabled and chronically or even terminally ill people to talk to students about how disability and disease do not make life worthless. What percentage of those students are going to end up with a disability or illness at some point in life? They need a better answer than our #ThrowawayCulture offers them when this inevitability arrives on their doorstep. #MakingHealthClassCatholic, #MakingEveryClassCatholic

Yes, the Christian teachings are in strident contradiction with the current State of the World. They always were, btw, and so are all the highest ethical codexes, such the The Human Rights Declaration and many others (even just the USA Constitution vis-a-vis USA population). They are embodiments of desires and goals towards which to work, if possible. That is OF COURSE the principal problem of people like Pope Francis, whom I respect a lot, even if I am an atheist. He should be the guardian of Jesus' ethics as well as the Top Manager of a huge and millenia old worldly organization (one with phenomenal real estate possessions, banks, etc), navigating the stormy ocean of Human passions, wars, atrocities, contradicting morales, politics, movements, etc. A position impossible to maintain without getting smacked in face every day. And he manages reasonably well, which is why I really respect him. I am sure he is a a wise and good man, suffering a lot. But that does not mean that he is infallible and always right. That doctrine was what centuries ago led to the Reformation movements and schisms in Cristianity, and eventually was tacitly rejected even by the Catholic religion itself. So, the question, even for Christians, is whether he made an error regarding the raising of a white flag by the Ukrainians. It is not easy to answer. I hate current Russian nationalism, stubborn, obtuse, and void of any humanity. But I also hate the idea of a protracted intensive war in Ukraine lasting for decades. I also take it for granted that Pope Francis does not ingeniously believe that if the Ukrainians really raised the white flag now, the Kremlin would answer. The Kremlin would probably just get bolder and more vicious.
