As an Executive Business Partner (EBP) at Drata, my job is largely cross functional communication. For example, I interact with Co-Founders, C-Suite, Senior Leadership, Operations Managers, Account Executives, Business Development Leads, Customer Success Managers; all on almost a daily basis. Not to mention the host of others I interact with leading our EBP Team who all power areas across the business such as Tech, Product, Sales, CS, Finance, HR, Marketing, etc. It's not just about interacting with others but to understand their lingo, their pain points, their aspirations. So much of the success of my job is reliant on being able to seek to understand and stitch the communication gap between these different areas of the business. Being an EBP is rewarding, because you serve in one of the most cross functional roles in the company and are solving the businesses and people's problems. 🚀

That’s because self-autonomy is linked to self-determination. When you are self-determined, you evaluate the why behind the things you do. As a result, you feel in more control — which gives you a sense of freedom. Specifically, self-determination provides 3 basic psychological needs: Competence — you feel effective in meeting the needs of your environment Autonomy — you feel authentic, act with volition and have meaningful input Relatedness — you feel connected and cared for by others So what can make you self-determined?

As per the research, the actual drivers of performance is difficult to disentangle and hence people tend to evaluate competence based on other factors. This means that we have to do more than produce results to convince people of our expertise. One way to do this is by demonstrating confidence in your abilities.

Your role as a manager is not to do the work yourself, even if you are the best at it, because that will only take you so far. Your role is to improve the purpose, people, and process of your team to get as high a multiplier effect on your collective outcome as you can.

The expertise among my new colleagues is impressive, and I have already gained a lot of knowledge that will help me both in my new role and personally. What I appreciate about working in product management is the dynamic nature of the role. It allows me to collaborate across various teams, tackle diverse challenges, and contribute to the strategic development of markets and products. For me, understanding market needs and translating them into solutions is the only path to sustainable success. I find this especially true as an IT manager. What I'm responsible for is way too big and complex for any one person to fully know all the minutiae of. But knowing WHO KNOWS and being willing and able to reach out to them is the greater skill.
