The space and satellite industry is ever-expanding, but capital supporting this universe does not reach to infinity. In fact, new investments are at an eight-year low while a confluence of factors – including last year’s popping of the SPAC bubble – could spell consolidation on the horizon. A flurry of recent deals suggests this trend already has liftoff. In August, BAE Systems announced its intention to acquire Ball Aerospace for $5.5 billion. Considering the recent wave of artificial intelligence advancements, it makes sense that AI considerations appear to be among the drivers. After all, Ball Aerospace, in conjunction with the Air Force Research Laboratory, is said to be pioneering “smart satellites” to process data in space. On-orbit processing, where spacecrafts use AI to process data at the point of collection, will be its own space race, industry experts predict. The acquisition would give BAE Systems, a U.K.-based defense and security conglomerate, “strong growth potential in areas aligned with the U.S. intelligence community and Department of Defense’s highest priorities,” BAE said in a statement.
