The Chaillot Declaration, adopted by 70 governments last week at the UN Environment Programme Buildings and Climate Global Forum, is a first-of-a-kind commitment to #decarbonise #buildings: https://lnkd.in/ekq_jjAb The declaration, while not without its shortcomings, is a win for decarbonising our #BuiltEnvironment: 👍 It signals clearly and explicitly the intent to move away from the fossil-fuel-based status quo: #carbon-intensive buildings, and #heating and #cooling systems which lock consumers into unsustainable, polluting systems. 👏 It includes specific objectives which are crucial to decarbonise heating and cooling, such as #electrification and enhancing demand flexibility. ⚖️It calls for implementing long-term regulatory roadmaps and frameworks, as well as mandatory building and energy codes, requiring integrated comprehensive design. What does this mean for the EU? 🚨Adopt the #EPBD! We are on the eve of the European Parliament’s vote on the #EPBD - a crucial piece of legislation that will pave the way towards meeting the commitments made within the declaration, and enable citizens’ choice for cleaner and healthier buildings. ⚠️We need a new and strategic #ActionPlan for heating and cooling! The last heating and cooling strategy dates from 2016  - we are now in a radically different geopolitical and climate context, and our approach to heating and cooling needs to reflect this. Buildings and heating and cooling decarbonisation go hand-in-hand, and we need a policy push from the EU level. Heating and cooling account for around half of our energy consumption in the European Union. We simply can’t reach our climate targets without implementing #sustainable, #renewable and #affordable heating and cooling solutions. The declaration further signals the EU to advance on the issue. Now it’s time to back commitments with swift policy action. In this module, we explored the definition and objectives of Ecodesign, examined the primary environmental pressures that we can address, and learned about the four essential steps to incorporate Ecodesign principles into our projects.

Day 17/21 of HVAC facts The quest for sustainable HVAC is on! Research on solar-powered systems, natural refrigerants, and energy-efficient technologies is ongoing, aiming to reduce the environmental impact of these systems.

As the semester comes to an end, I am excited to talk about some of the work my group and I from CEE 520 (Intro to Sustainable Engineering) have worked on. Over the past few months, we have used our pre-existing knowledge and lectures to create pre- and post-concept maps of the following: -Water -Climate Change -Food -Infrastructure These concept maps are visual summaries of what we've learned about important topics like water, climate change, food, and infrastructure. They show how different parts of these systems are connected and how they impact each other. They represent our understanding of some of the largest challenges we face today and required critical thinking, research, and collaboration between my group and me. The maps aren't just words on paper though, but rather a tool to help us understand the bigger issues at hand. I'm glad I was able to contribute to the making of these concept maps and learn a lot from them, as they will serve as useful tools for advancing sustainable solutions in our communities.

🙌 On January 26, 2024, a significant event unfolds – the first-ever #InternationalDayofCleanEnergy, acting as a reminder that our 🌍 must embark on a transition towards #cleanenergy. The relationship between clean energy and #buildings is diverse, encompassing various facets connected to #energyefficiency, #sustainability, and environmental impact. 📽 In the video, nZEBRA coordinator Heidi Norrström highlights that the #energysector is responsible for 80% of the greenhouse gas emissions. To limit #climatechange, we have to emit little to no #greenhouse gases or pollutants into the air. To achieve it, improving #energyefficiency is key ➡ the energy #building sector should be the leader in this transformation. nZEBRA puts a little stone in this global endeavour through education.
