Pinterest is leading the way again. This Social Media today post caught my eye this morning. Easy ways to bake inclusion and diversity into your social and creative processes from the word go as opposed to adding as an afterthought or not including at all. Last year, I visited Pinterest HQ in Toronto for work and was again blown away by their ability to read and forecast culture and lead the way in social/search/marketing practices. So much more than pretty pictures and inspo boards. Their strategy and outlook values diversity, equity and inclusion through lenses of ethnicity, disability, race, gender, and age. Did you know there’s a strong business case for inclusive business and marketing practices? Need proof? 1. Diverse companies produce 19% more revenue. https://lnkd.in/g_-4BqXX 2. Companies with more than 30 percent women executives were more likely to outperform companies where this percentage ranged from 10 to 30, and in turn these companies were more likely to outperform those with even fewer women executives, or none at all. ~ McKinsey.com https://lnkd.in/gXrKtmte 3. We talk a lot about DEI efforts in the workplace. Do we consistently take the time to ensure these efforts extend to our end users and customers? When properly executed, inclusion fosters psychological safety, diversity of thought, innovation, and superior business results (supported by BCG's new research - link in comments). Pinterest's introduction of "body type ranges" is a prime example of extending DEI to users, enabling individuals to see themselves in fashion and wedding inspirations and highlighting the critical role of inclusive product design. It's an important nudge for businesses to weave inclusivity into every operation layer. There are times on social media where I feel completely disheartened. But then, something wonderful happens. I recently learned how Pinterest has taken a monumental leap forward in promoting inclusivity with the launch of its innovative new tool: ‘body type ranges’. What’s so amazing about it? It's... → Inclusion at the Heart of Inspiration → A Broader Vision for Inclusivity → Real Impact, Real Engagement → Responding to User Needs The new feature empowers users to self-select the body types they want to see in their search results for women’s fashion and wedding ideas. This is a significant stride toward making Pinterest the most inclusive online space to search, save, and shop. Pinterest: The positive corner of the internet.

The Pinterest inclusion fund seems like a really good initiative from what I think of as "the nice social network." They say "The Pinterest Inclusion Fund is now accepting applications for UK-based small merchant businesses, independent lifestyle publishers and boutique creator agencies that are either owned and operated by, or create content or products for historically underrepresented communities." Those communities are defined by Pinterest as "BIPOC, disability, plus-size and LGBTQIA+ communities" See the link for full eligibility details. Here's why this article gives me the ick: 😣 The whole premise peddles the idea of pitting generations against each other. Gen Z vs Millennials, soon to be Gen Alpha vs Gen Z. Although he talks about "working together", the final conclusion is craft can only be taught through years of experience. This takes away the value of meritocracy. 🗣 Age does NOT define your ability to know culture. It's underselling of junior talent to say their only benefit is being young and relevant. It also undersells the democratization of knowledge the internet has provided for everyone. Feeding into these tropes diminishes the intelligence of all generations. I love telling the tale of Stephen Chen, Duolingo's Legal Counsel, who knows TikTok more than me. He is def not Gen-Z OR Millennial, yet has mastered internet culture! Let's break down some quotes: 🤦♀️ "Truly experienced creatives and strategists generate more ideas in an hour than their junior counterparts can in a month, because...they aren’t afraid of failure or throwing out a bad idea to find a good one." Err... if we're making this about age, I would argue that junior talent is far less precious with their work because they're at the bottom of the food chain. But, age does not define your ability to generate ideas. I made Duolingo's TikTok famous a year into my career. Stan Lee published his first comic book at at 40 years old. (i am not delulu enough to think we are in the same league, just an example!) ❌ "And with younger employees so anxious over cancel culture that they routinely censor themselves, who besides a hardened pro—who doesn’t give a damn—can show them how to be outspoken, irreverent and contrarian?" It's not anxiety over the act of getting canceled - it's extreme care to ensure that we're creating work that's actually representative of our users. It's about being empathetic to people of different backgrounds & identities in a way that we never saw growing up. Being outspoken and irreverent by actively harming and misrepresenting is nothing to be lauded. Pretty sure that's how the Kendall Jenner Pepsi ad happened. 🧐 "Let’s defeat age together by protecting our most valuable resource—skill honed over a lifetime—and make sure it doesn’t get lost." The article ends with this oxymoron. Somehow, he's defeating ageism by selectively only elevating those with years of experience. Which, historically in marketing, tend to be highly paid white men. This is late stage capitalism at it's finest: you're only as good as the output of work you bring to the table. That work is only valuable if you've been at it for years and sacrificed everything. If someone defeats this idea, by being junior and exhibiting craft, then they are now your competition and aren't actually intelligent contributors. They're just favored because they're young. I swear it's not a way for me to chat with women but... We at Scenario need to talk to people who use Pinterest. 👉🏼 Please connect me with such users. Ideally in the US. Thanks to the women I met last year at events who told me that what we're doing is like Pinterest + showing what's financially possible. My reaction: oh my god. Followed by several late nights. Pinterest engages people's limbic system and prefontal cortex. For Scenario to be massively impactful (for good), we should additionally drive certain areas of the brain that are not served by Pinterest. Sure one angle is solving a big problem... with a product... to yield a big business but... Another angle -- of the same thing -- is to identify... The smallest subset of the brain with high interconnectivity that should be served so that people can build a good life. You can think about it like a math problem. 👋🏽This morning, I'm hopping into a topic that I've grown increasingly intrigued by: Culture done right. What companies are hitting the mark on building a place where people want to work? One of those places looks like Bumble Inc. 🐝. 🔥They've established an expectation that multiple minds will contribute to an idea or final product. 🔥They are committed to directing and using employee feedback. 🔥Their values extend outside of the workplace and radiate to the customers. 🔥Their internal tech stack is innovative and high-performing. 🔥They've exquisitely designed their benefits to cater to their employee population. Opportunities like four weeks of flexible working to transition back into work for caregivers and an employee who was a victim of domestic violence or another violent crime would be able to take a minimum of 20 days paid leave are just the highlights. Doesn't that leave you wanting more? What does this teach us as culture creators? 💡In this new phase of work, culture goes well beyond perks, benefits, pay, and outings. It goes past inclusion efforts and affinity months. 💡Treat your people like people with lives outside of work. 💡Multiply your impact by getting more minds involved in your strategy. 💡And ain't nobody trying to use outdated tech This has me looking to level up!
