BREAKING NEWS: City of St. Petersburg, Florida ranks No. 1 in Florida and No. 11 in the nation for park systems by the Trust for Public Land (TPL) in this year’s ParkScore® index, which analyzed 100 of the largest U.S. cities to determine how well each city is meeting the needs for parks. According to TPL, 78% of St. Pete residents are within a 10-minute walk of a park. St. Pete is no stranger to being in the top 15; however, the City continues to climb in the ranking as it aims to create an inclusive and equitably accessible parks and recreation system. https://lnkd.in/eTYiTVma

As a former Parks and Recreation professional I can say the episodes I did watch did have some similarities. There are many days I miss the profession, being surrounded by so many peers who are very passionate about their careers. Parks and Recreation professionals provide programs and services for people when they are not working. Thus, typically involves many nights and weekends. Parks and Recreation professionals also where many hats. Marketing, Budgeting, Leadership, and Creative Programming. If you were in facilities you also developed a skill set in understanding Safety, OSHA, Project Management, Janitorial, HVAC, Electrical and unfortunately Plumbing. Hats off to my past professional peers, colleagues, friends. #mnrpa #parksandrecreation #diversity #arenamanagement
Park and recreation professionals often get asked, “Is it like the show?” The show in question is the sitcom Parks and Recreation. Leslie Knope, deputy director of the parks department in fictional Pawnee, Indiana, wants to beautify her town by assisting local nurse Ann Perkins in transforming an abandoned construction site into a communal park. Numerous obstacles impede the progress of what ought to be a rather straightforward project! It’s hilarious, but is it an accurate depiction of working for a park and recreation department in local government? The answer is yes! Well, sort of. The Seeing Friends project provides opportunities for social connection, physical activity, and wider community integration and this grant will support the expansion of this project. Activities include community-based social ‘hubs’ held in local venues, allowing services to be taken to where people live, meeting regularly for lunch, or around a shared interest such as swimming, gardening, or reading. Regular, in-person contact with other visually impaired people counters isolation for participants, who grow in confidence and self-esteem, supporting their independence and wider community involvement, empowering them to try new things and forge new, lasting connections. Communities are made up of many parts. Some of which include people, locations, natural resources, knowledge, recreation, and beliefs. Various combinations of these, and other attributes, can drive the success of an overall community, making it greater than the sum of each of its parts on their own. #WamplerDevelopment #BuildingBetterCommunities #1+1>2 #Synergy

Democracy is a lot bigger than any 🗳 single election, and it's bigger than our ⚖ political system. As we experience extreme levels of toxic polarization, division, and loneliness in this country, each of us needs to orient our work (and life) in a way that 🤝 strengthens democratic norms, processes, and cultures in our local communities. I'm thrilled to see Trust for Public Land's 🔬 latest research and thinking on the pivotal role that 🏞 parks play in fostering democracy, justice, and social cohesion published in 📑 the Stanford Social Innovation Review last week. In the article, my co-authors and I highlight powerful case studies that demonstrate how parks serve as vital spaces for community engagement, activism, and the cultivation of democratic values through activities like community organizing, land stewardship, and creative placemaking. Each of us has a part to play in making our democracy work. And I promise you don't have to look much farther than your local park to get involved and take action. 💚 🌳 👊
Parks are where we walk and jog, children enjoy playgrounds, and people meet for social gatherings. They are also a starting point for building community power and strengthening democracy. The Trust for Public Land developed a framework for enabling local communities to decide how to renovate their green spaces and found that organizing communities to redesign their parks galvanized residents to connect on other issues of shared concern. What started as a parks project became an exercise in community power building and democratic enrichment: “Communities build relationships with their environment and with each other, coalesce around a place-based identity grounded in their shared passion, and ultimately consolidate and exercise community power to transform residents’ lives for the better.” 🌳In SSIR’s new summer issue, Geneva Vest, Cary Simmons, and Howard Frumkin share more about the framework and ways to nurture civic engagement and a thriving democracy through our parks and green spaces ➡ https://lnkd.in/e8bgMN3X #socialinfrastructure #parks #democracy

New Freedom Borough and Shrewsbury Township, under the Southern York County Regional Recreation Commission, are thrilled to announce the appointment of Gianina Porter as the Commission's inaugural Director of Recreation. The establishment of the Southern York County Regional Recreation Commission signifies a significant step forward in community collaboration and resource optimization. New Freedom Borough Council's approval of the Intermunicipal Agreement of Cooperation with Shrewsbury Township underscores the commitment to promoting regional cooperation and addressing evolving recreational priorities. As communities grow and funding sources become increasingly competitive, the importance of regional recreation initiatives becomes more evident. It's National Park and Recreation Month let's make parks the places #WhereYouBelong! According to the National Recreation and Park Association Ninety-three percent of U.S. adults say their mental health is improved by services offered by local park and recreation professionals and agencies. However, they estimate that as many as 100 million people — 30 percent of the U.S. population — lack access to the lifesaving and life-enhancing benefits parks and recreation provides. In 2019, the World Economic Forum pointed out that even where parks exist, they aren't accessible if they feel unsafe or unwelcoming. This month we celebrate the municipalities that are making the joy of parks accessible to all! #ParkAndRecMonth2024 #urbanplanning
