Post-pandemic the battle to be Europe's busiest airport is very much a two horse race between the UK's Heathrow and Türkiye's iGA Istanbul Airport. The Turkish airport was Europe's busiest for just over two years between September 2020 and October 2022 (apart from April 2022) before Heathrow started being busier on a regular basis. Most months Paris CDG ranks third with Royal Schiphol Group's Amsterdam, Aena's Madrid and Fraport AG's Frankfurt battling it out for positions four through six.
Comparing August 2024 with August 2019 the airports' performances regarding passenger numbers were: Heathrow +4%, Istanbul IST +15%, Paris CDG -8%, Amsterdam -6%, Frankfurt -12% and Madrid +5%. Given the relative expansion opportunities at Heathrow and Istanbul, how long before the Turkish airport returns to the number one spot on a permanent basis?

Yes, there is something very profound about the picture of this regional airport lounge in Australia, from the other side! To see things from a very different perspective always help us gain a much more three dimensional understanding. It is important to approach moral injury from perspectives beyond merely psychological ones. It is important to think about it, beyond the slogan definition of “being betrayed in high stakes situations”.
Look for philosophical, anthropological, historical, and even theological perspectives!

Bendigo airport's departure lounge from the otherside!
While most people get to see the airport operations through the terminal windows we thought to share what it looks like looking back from our perspective 😃
My latest video is now live! This week, we are traveling on France’s busiest rail corridor between Paris and Lyon with TGV Inoui onboard their most expensive accommodation, the Business Premiere.
The Business Premiere was launched in 2021, a few months ahead of the arrival of Trenitalia France and its flagship service, the Frecciarossa. The Business Premiere is an “upgraded” first class, with better services onboard the train and at the station.
If we compare it with the Frecciarossa, the Business Premiere is supposed to compete with the top-notch executive class, but is it enough?
Unfortunately, no. Despite an outstanding lounge in Gare de Lyon and a good onboard staff, the quality of service is definitely lower than its Italian competitor. First of all, the Business Premiere is just a classic first class with a sticker that says “Business Premiere,” so don’t expect some fancy seat like on the Frecciarossa. Then the food – finally, TGV Inoui is serving some food to its most expensive class, but here, the choice is quite limited and only cold. The food is served in a plastic bowl with wooden cutlery. What’s the point of hiring a world-class chef like Thierry Marx to serve this in a plastic bowl? I compared it with the food service on Frecciarossa, and the gap is just gigantic. Serving the same type of food (which was very good) on a true plate would be better for the customer and the environment, since it could be reusable. Your competitors are doing it; why can’t you?
As for the prices, the Business Premiere between Paris and Lyon is at a fixed price of €149, €10 more expensive than Frecciarossa.
The TGV Business Premiere only makes sense if you want more flexibility in your travel options, since TGV Inoui offers 26 round trips between Paris and Lyon, while Frecciarossa, on the other hand, offers 5 round trips so far.
If you want good quality of service, go for Frecciarossa. If you want flexibility, go for TGV Inoui!
Enjoy! 🚄

At first glance I thought this a somewhat counterintuitive news story.
Air France have announced an expected revenue hit of up to €180m this quarter from Paris hosting the Summer Olympic Games. Apparently there is evidence of people actively avoiding Paris with performance depressed versus other comparable European destinations.
Major sporting events normally provide a traffic boon for host cities, which is why so many airlines become principal sponsors of such, at not inconsiderable cost.
Sure the composition of traffic changes, with reduced business volumes offset by higher leisure, but an overall upside. BA’s volume increased 3% for London 2012.
So what’s going on?
I then read that Eurostar’s trains services between London and Paris are booked at more than 3 times higher than normal during the period, and evidence of people planning to stay in London and, in effect, commute.
So it just might have more to do with the prohibitively high cost of Parisian hotels and AirBnBs over the Games than the Olympics themselves. Worth noting that AF say they expect volumes to recover later in the season.
Or perhaps it’s the French who have bought all the tickets and, consequently, are delaying their summer travel plans?
Or maybe it’s something else…
