I enjoyed being at the Axis Bank HNWIs/UHNWIs event last night at the Trident in Mumbai, which culminated a month of my time in India, wherein aside from being with family and the AccelNorth Partners India team, I met close to 20 private markets participants (GPs, LPs, bankers, consultants).   I did come away feeling quite excited about the India story for a number of reasons (a) fundamental growth - c. 7-8% sustained GDP growth over a long period of time (b) disproportionately increasing discretionary wealth levels of those who have the ability to spend meaningfully (c) a maturing of the local ecosystem - in the VC world, IMHO the relative withdrawal of folks like Softbank and Target has helped normalise valuations and sustainability of those early stage companies who deserve to win longer-term, and in the PE world, India has never had the zero-rate environment that the West got used to, and the relative increase in rates in India has not been as steep, thereby affecting the math of LBOs less (where relevant), while benefiting from the fundamental growth of the economy and more so of certain sub-sectors within it (d) the continued benefit of a hard-working, entrepreneurial, English-fluent, young and relatively cheap labour force combined with the continued outsourcing of services and increasingly manufacturing (China substitution) from the West (e) a large increase in local LP appetite for private markets - which was so key to Europe’s private markets maturing - both institutions and large FOs + international institutions (especially from Singapore and the Middle East). Key risk to me remains exchange rate for $ and € investors. While the Rupee’s devaluation has been steady in the past many years, and linked to economic theory around inflation differential vs Western markets, it is something that needs properly accounting for in investment models…   Reach out if you want to talk about anything India (from travel tips to investments), while fresh in my mind!   On my way back to cold and rainy London….!

Aditya Puri was the CEO of Citibank Malaysia when Deepak Parekh rang him up, "𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮. 𝗟𝗲𝘁'𝘀 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿." 39 years later, they have built India's largest private-sector bank with a market cap of ₹12 Trillion! Deepak Parekh had visited Singapore for a short weekend as he was heading to Mauritius for a meeting. “You run around the world a lot. Now, come back to your country, build a bank.” Parekh told Puri as they met at his home for dinner. Puri had no interest. He was making $100,000 at that time at Citibank. "But what is in it for me?" Puri asked a valid question. "I can't match your salary right now, but trust me, you will be building an institution. It's an unmatched opportunity, but only if you believe in it." Parekh told him. After agreeing on complete freedom to run the bank and great stock options, Aditya Puri came on board. At the time they started, the public sector banks held 90% of the business. When Puri and the team looked at the landscape, they realised that the public sector had the brand, the distribution, and the deposits. Meanwhile, the foreign players had the product, the service, and the excellent talent from across the globe. HDFC Bank brought all of this together.
