Did you know employment law in the UK is changing next year to help you better look after your loved ones and remain thriving in work❓ The Carers Leave Act will come into force in 2024 providing all employees the right to one week of unpaid leave a year to help care for their loved ones. This could be a child, a spouse, an elderly parent or a friend. It's Carers Rights Day this week (Thursday 23 November) It's a day dedicated to raising awareness to the rights and challenges faced by unpaid carers. ▶ There are an estimated 10.6 million unpaid carers in the Uk ▶ 7.7 million unpaid carers juggle caring responsibilities around work commitments. Knowing our rights as unpaid carers is powerful stuff 💪 But we rarely have the time or energy to read up on legal matters. That’s why we’ve created a guide full of bitesized chunks and a handy video, to help us get started. But we don’t think the rights, as they are today, should stop there... There’s always more to be done to make sure our rights give us the support we need and deserve. That’s why, in the run up to today - Carers’ Rights Day - we asked our community what would be most helpful to them. Here’s what over 170 members of the Mobilise community said: 🏥 37% ranked ‘Greater recognition, involvement and support from our GPs and the NHS’ as most helpful. 🫶 36% put ‘Access to quality and affordable social care, including respite care so we can have a break from our caring responsibilities’ in the top spot. 👩💻 24% chose ‘Better workplace support - in addition to the new for 2024 right to five days of unpaid leave per year from work, to manage caring challenges whilst also staying in work’ in first place. With the theme of this year’s Carers UK Carers’ Rights Day, ‘Your rights: today, tomorrow and in the future’, we’re sharing these stats to shout a little louder about the rights we have - so we all know what we’re entitled to now - but to also shout about what else we need to help us care and thrive. #CarersRightsDay #CarersRightsDay2023 #UnpaidCarers #CarerSupport

Happy Carers Week! 🙌 This week, we recognise and celebrate the incredible contributions of carers across the UK. Whether you are a family member, friend, or professional carer, your dedication, care and compassion does not go unnoticed. Carers' often stressful duties make a profound difference in the lives of those who cannot care for themselves. In light of Carers Week, we want to highlight a recent change in the law aiming to provide better resources, financial support, and recognition of the vital role carers play in society. ❗ As of 6 April 2024, carers are entitled to a week of unpaid leave to tend to those they care for, which is a day one right. Previously, the only provision carers had was unpaid ‘dependents’ leave which was only reserved for ‘emergencies’.❗ This change is a significant step towards valuing the hard work and sacrifices made by carers every day. But, we cannot stop here. We need to remain committed to ensuring greater rights and equality for carers. Some factors to consider are whether carer’s allowance should be extended to workers and not just employees, or whether part of the leave should be paid. The Carer's Leave Act is now law in the UK 👏 Every day, more than 600 people leave their jobs because of their caring responsibilities. Having dedicated leave is a massive step in the right direction. What's new? 🗓 You can now take up to one week of unpaid leave per year if you're caring for someone long-term. ⏰ This leave starts from your very first day on the job. ❓ You can use this leave flexibly, taking half or full days off for planned caring responsibilities.  🌍 This applies across England, Wales, and Scotland, offering the same protections as other family-related leaves, such as protection from dismissal. This is a huge win for the 2.3 million working carers in Great Britain. We know that keeping talented carers in the workforce benefits everyone. 📢 It's #CarersRightsDay! This year the focus is on your rights: today, tomorrow and in the future. The campaign emphasises why it is important that carers understand their rights so that they can access the correct support. 🌟 Attention Unpaid Carers! 🌟 Starting on April 6th, the Carers Leave Act 2023 comes into play, granting you a valuable week of unpaid leave. It might not seem like a grand victory, but it's a step forward, and more importantly, it's the LAW! To Employers: Don't just sit back – this isn’t a tick list thing. Be proactive, support your working carers, engage positively. If you can, consider paying them—it's a small gesture that can make a huge difference.
