I've written and reviewed a LOT of surveys over my career. Lately, I've seen many drafts use strong biased language in their questions. General examples: ❓ Would you prefer to use a natural or artificial supplement? ❓ Have you ever visited a fake reproductive health clinic? ❓ How much does the overturning of Roe v Wade scare you? While I believe that no survey is 100% "neutral," using words like "artificial," "fake," and "scare" has the potential to cause respondents to gravitate towards the answer they feel is correct (e.g., who would choose artificial over natural?). It also alienates some participants by creating a sense of judgement (e.g., it's possible that someone has already received services at the "fake" clinic and now may feel concerned or angry after reading that question). When designing surveys, think about your respondents: How would you feel if you answered a question using each available option? If you get a sense of being wrong or judged, try to find a different way to ask. Let's include everyone's perspectives in our surveys to get the best possible results. #inclusionmatters #surveydesign
