I asked 100 students about their career aspirations after college... Some responded that they didn't know, while others were indecisive, confused, or unaware of the multiple options available to them. It's estimated that 50% of college students begin their academic journey "Undecided" about their career paths. A staggering 75% of them change their majors before graduating. Starting college "Undecided" is acceptable, but remaining in that state can hamper your career success. You have plenty of time to figure things out, but it's important to use that time wisely. Here are some steps to help you find the right career path: 🎯 Assess your skills and interests. 🎯 Identify activities that puts you in a flow. 🎯 Seek out internships, part-time jobs, and volunteer opportunities to gain practical experience and discover your strengths. 🎯 Attend career fairs, industry events, and alumni networking sessions to connect with professionals. "The greatest return on your investment in a college education isn't just your degree—though that's certainly crucial—it's instilling a love for lifelong learning and guiding students toward their passions," said Jeremy Borling, senior director of communication at North Central College. Peak recruitment seasons to know  Overall, the most popular month for recruitment on college campuses is October for jobs beginning the following summer. This includes summer internships and full-time positions for students who are graduating. Other popular recruitment months are September and February. Recruiting and hiring usually slow down in November and December during the holiday season and again in July and August due to summer vacation.  Below, we highlight recruiting timelines for college students in various industries. Keep in mind that these timelines are specifically for students and recent graduates, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Other types of recruitment may occur at different times. This The Wall Street Journal story underscores a common denominator to early career success: paid, work-based learning experiences. 🏆 When all students have access to meaningful, work-based learning opportunities, everyone wins, including businesses. 💡 Research from the National Association of Colleges and Employers has found that interns who become employees are retained at higher rates than other hires: 75.5% are still with the organization after their first year on the job compared to 51.5% of non-intern employees (NACE 2023 Internship & Co-op Report, 2023). Education at Work graduates hired by corporate partners have a 90% retention rate after one year. The STEM Career Fair is in March 13th which is now one month away! Here are some tips on how to best prepare for the event: ▶️ Get a headshot! It doesn't have to be by a professional, an iPhone will do just fine! Use natural light and a blank background. ▶️ Update your resume and portfolio with internships, projects, or relevant classes from the Fall 2023 semester. ▶️ Check out end-of-season clothing sales to stock your professional wardrobe. Lots of stores have sales this time of year! ▶️ Reach out to people who could serve as professional references. (Professors, internship coordinators, advisors, mentors) ▶️Create a plan for how you're going to apply for summer internships. The semester will be busy, but summer comes fast!

Degree in hand, but stuck in a job that feels like a mismatch? You’re not the only one. Over half of all Americans with college degrees work in positions that neither require a bachelor's degree nor make use of the skills they learned to get one. Even worse, they can end up staying there their whole professional lives. The Burning Glass Institute and the Strada Institute for the Future of Work recently shed light on this issue. Half of grads end up in jobs they didn't need to go to college for, even in a booming market. Roles in retail, hospitality, and manufacturing sectors are common culprits. So, what can we do to avoid the underemployment trap? 1. Choose Your Major Wisely: A college degree isn’t a golden ticket to a high-paying job. The secret sauce? Your major! Nursing grads have a better shot at using their skills than criminal justice majors. 2. Internships Matter: While pursuing your degree, snagging an internship reduces the risk of underemployment by almost 50%. It’s like a backstage pass to the career you’re aiming for! 3. When dropping my 16 year old daughter off at IMG Academy for three intense weeks of basketball I had a chance to check out the campus. While my daughter is only there for a few weeks in the summer, they have a year-round high school for student-athletes that is beyond intense - and this isn't even the college level! Although a large part of the non-academic program is focused on physical training, what stood out to me was how much was focused on mental toughness - teamwork, overcoming adversity, coachability, self discipline, communication... Unfortunately, I don't think enough student-athletes appreciate how valuable those skills are off the field. And while employers highlight how these Core Skills are vital in the workplace, their hiring processes frequently cause them to miss out on what could be great hires. As I've heard from college student-athletes, they often miss out on career fair, info sessions, or other recruiting events given their schedules. They frequently can't take summer internships or co-ops. They get filtered out because their resume doesn't have the experiences of their non-athlete peers. For campus recruiters, I urge you to think about if your processes create pathways for student-athletes - this not only helps them, but also helps your organization hire those with those Core Skills we know are most valuable! (And to be clear, I have no skin in the game on this topic. My daughter is barely 5 feet and has close to zero chance of playing at the college level.)
