However, there are three key objectives that should always be top of mind: community acceptance, industry recognition, and client appreciation. These factors can greatly impact the success of a project and the overall reputation of the businesses involved. Brownfield Land, Greenspace and Nature Based Solutions This morning I attended an excellent webinar on brownfield land and the benefits of its re-use for greenspace, natural capital and biodiversity. The webinar was run by SiLC (Specialist in Land Condition Register), a network of engineering experts in land management and restoration. I had the chance to share information on our forthcoming publication on progress with re-use of vacant and derelict land as well as touching on our guidance on Delivering Community Benefits from Land and our research on the land market in Scotland. I learnt a great deal at the webinar and was encouraged by the good work being undertaken across the UK to restore damaged and contaminated land and to make sure that nature and local communities benefit from that restoration. Some key themes emerged (for me) from the event: How do we properly measure the benefits of land re-use and nature restoration so that decisions on land use and investment fully take account of these benefits? How can private finance be encouraged to invest in land and nature restoration and what will this mean for the type of projects and case studies that we discuss at future events? How do we ensure that communities are at the heart of and benefit from land use decisions? Lots of learning for me and lots to think about in our future work.

✊ 17th June 2024: The European Council formally adopts historic #NatureRestorationLaw 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭? The new Nature Restoration Law calls for the restoration of at least 20% of land and sea areas in the European Union by 2030 and all #ecosystems in need of #restoration by 2050. It comes at a time when 80% of Europe's habitat and 70% of its soil are in a poor shape. The law covers a wide range of ecosystems including #forests, #agriculture, urban areas, rivers or lakes. Each EU country will have to submit a national restoration plan to the European Commission, proposing a series of measures such as preventing the loss of urban green spaces, restoring drained peatlands or planting trees. 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 #𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧? RethinkAction, through its multisectoral land-use based adaptation and mitigation solutions (#LAMS) catalogue, can contribute to the achievement of these goals by providing guidance and useful information for the implementation of solutions relevant for nature restoration. In particular the LAMS catalogue includes solutions which are also part of the law, such as reforestation, the restoration of wetlands and peatlands, or the establishment and maintenance of green urban ecosystems, and can be a very useful tool in supporting local authorities to develop their restoration plans and meet the important objectives of the law. #NatureRestoration #LandUse #Horizon2020 https://buff.ly/4b6jPNP

In the spirit of Canadian Environment Week, Ducks Unlimited Canada’s Institute for Wetland and Waterfowl Research is celebrating highlights from an environmental accomplishment that was three decades in the making. The team has reached—and surpassed—a remarkable milestone: its 800th scientific publication. This achievement is grounded in the strength of our partnerships which have led to rewarding collaborations across the continent. One of these alliances resulted in a widely used 2011 case study and 2017 journal article, both co-authored by IWWR’s Shane Gabor—now retired and an early investigator of the increasing interest in using ecosystem services associated with wetlands to inform sustainable land-use decisions. The study was based in the Black River watershed in highly populated southern Ontario. The stakeholder group of academic, government and conservation interests pooled strengths to analyze phosphorus reduction and other ecosystem services, applying a return-on-investment valuation to show that wetland conservation was an "economically feasible option for preventing further environmental degradation" in the sub-watershed and broader Lake Simcoe basin. Water quality/quantity is the central theme of 80 of IWWR’s first 800 scientific publications—that’s 10% of the research team’s output. 'Maximising Natural Capital Benefits for Brownfield and Sustainable Development' webinar. The webinar will explore how government seeks to support the reframing of nature in terms of the value to people and the economy to create sustainable development. Speakers will discuss how, by taking a ‘natural capital’ approach to decision making, development can maximise eco goods and services to get more from our land. From the simple concept of delivering the ‘right land use in the right place’ to the more complex considerations of achieving and maintaining biodiversity or environmental net gain post-development.

NATURE RESTORATION LAW ENTERS INTO FORCE Today marks the implementation of one of the most significant EU regulations integrating biodiversity and climate adaptation policies - the Nature Restoration Law. This milestone has profound implications for urban policymakers, particularly under Article 8 focused on urban ecosystems. From now on, new legal framework will ensure the protection and expansion of total national area of urban green space and of urban tree canopy cover. As someone who has dedicated his entire career to enhancing urban resilience, I am fully supportive of this shift and all the reconstruction efforts carried out in line with the NRL, such as those in Warsaw (see photo of Bracka Street). How is the Polish Ministry of Climate and Environment (Ministerstwo Klimatu i Środowiska) preparing the urban management system to meet these requirements? ✅ We have allocated substantial funds, available through highly favorable competitions, for municipalities planning to establish new green areas. 🔜 We are drafting regulations that will require cities to develop local climate adaptation plans, incorporating strategies to increase green areas and tree cover. 🔜 We are preparing an amendment to the Nature Conservation Act to strengthen the protection of existing trees and improve the overall management of green areas. 🔄 We have initiated a collaboration with the Head Office of Geodesy and Cartography to enhance the collection of spatial data on urban ecosystems. 🔄 We are planning studies on urban gardening administrative structures to assess their effectiveness and identify areas in need of support. #urbandesign #NBS #NatureBasedSolutions #SustainableCities #biodiversity #climatechange #climateadaptation #climateresilience

A new guide for coastal managers contemplating Environmental Economic Accounts 👇 - including some advice about the differences between environmental economics (valuation) and environmental economic accounting, and when to use what!

The topic of discussion in this study focused on survey questions to experts working in the protection, management and restoration of coastal wetlands in Australia. One of the key questions were "what (if any) are the current legal barriers to effective management, protection and restoration of mangroves and other wetlands?" The main issues that were identified was the integration of ecosystem services into decision-making frameworks, trade-offs and cost benefit analysis, land tenure issues, future migration and sea-level rise and restoration. From the interviews a list was compiled of key priorities for enhancing coastal wetland protection, management and restoration, which are: (1) Prioritise productive protection, management, and restoration efforts, (2) Obtain and maintain adequate and targeted funding to protect and restore wetland ecosystem services, (3) Take a holistic, whole of system approach, (4) Halt degrading processes and direct impacts on coastal wetlands, (5) Simplify processes for protecting and restoring coastal wetlands on private land, and (6) Normalise the language of ecosystem services. The study indicated a clear appetite for law reform with greater integration and holistic management of ecosystems, as well as further research needed into managing ecosystem services across different land tenures and facilitating restoration projects. Issues of managing trade-offs and prioritisation remain difficult to resolve, but greater integration of law and policy would facilitate the crucial first step of ensuring that these trade-offs are made explicit to decision-makers and therefore taken into account in decision-making processes. #wetlands #coastalresilience Environmental Science & Policy (2023) https://lnkd.in/eH7_bX_T

The EU's new Nature Restoration Law is unique in it's ambition to restore degraded habitats across the EU by 2050, but implementing it will be challenging: the spatial scale of the rollout, the short timeframe for targets (plans are due from every EU state in 1-2 years), the need for joined-up international cooporation and the risk of unintended consequences. Now, more than ever, we need science-informed policy decision-making that takes into account the multi-disciplinarity of nature conservation.
