Today, we're holding space for 8.3 MILLION hectares of wetlands. 🙋 Fun Fact: Did you know Australia's internationally important wetlands take up more space than Tasmania? It's wild to imagine, but true! We are lucky to have 67 sites on the List of Wetlands of International Importance, also called the Ramsar List. Over a third of the world's wetlands have been destroyed in the past 50 years, so we must care for ours. World Wetlands Day is this Sunday 2 February. It's the perfect chance to pay it forward and thank your local wetland for being part of our planet's 'kidneys'. Now is the time to help preserve and restore our wetlands, which are crucial for human well-being and environmental health. Here are some ways you can make a difference: 📅 Participate in a local World Wetlands Day event and spread the word about our important, incredible wetlands. 🌱 Help out a local volunteer group doing wetland conservation and restoration activities. 🔭 Become a citizen scientist and help monitor wetland ecosystems to track their health and biodiversity. Sunday 2 February is World Wetlands Day. This year's theme is ‘Protecting Wetlands for our Common Future.’ What does that really mean? Well, healthy wetlands give us: 💧 clean water 🍚 healthy, reliable food supplies 🌩️ protection against extreme weather 🌱 habitat and food for threatened species and diverse wildlife 🏃 space for play and recreation 🛥️ livelihoods and industry 💧 culture, spirituality and connection. We need them now and forever. Humans have destroyed more than 30% of the world's wetlands over the last 50 years. Looking after the ones we have left is critical. Why not pay it forward and thank your local wetland by helping to conserve and protect it? Especially since our wetlands are always helping us! Join us in marking World Wetlands Day. We'll be working to repair and manage Australia's wetlands for a nature positive future https://brnw.ch/21wQjOg
