Wow! I had the true privilege and honor to be in a room last evening with an amazing group of Vanderbilt University Medical Center physicians. The physician council meets on a monthly basis and this month we had a holiday reception. They each shared a story about a proud moment they have had in their career as a doctor. The stories were truly amazing and I think reconnected us all on the difference made in the very noble profession of medicine. What did I walk away with? 1) The practice of medicine is not always about doing something but sometimes about just being there, with and for another person. 2) There are a lot of up's and down's in caring for others but it can be the middle ground where you see the differences. 3) It starts with caring and as long as one cares the what and how will follow. 4) Lives have been saved based on taking risks and chances. People who probably should not have walked out of the hospital did because of the skill and compassion shown by health care professionals. 5) Don't give up. Heard numerous stories of adversity and individuals not wanting to engage or give up and because of the empathy shown by a doctor they engaged, were helped, and are now advocates for others stricken with their conditions to get help. An amazing group of humans. I finished by sharing that they shared 20 stories of lives forever changed, including their own, but the ripples are so much larger. There are countless families celebrating this holiday season with a loved one because of the amazing skill and care provided by all the professionals in the Health Care Industry. The little things, can have the biggest impact. Catching some midweek morning miles 🚴ahead of the VOA Annual Conference, reflecting on the profound impact the VIRGINIA OPTOMETRIC ASSOCIATION INC , state associations across the nation, and the American Optometric Association have had advancing patient care and access to care, through advocacy for patients, providers, and communities. Currently a dozen states have advanced scope of optometric care signed into the legislature (including Virginia!👁️), with a dozen more on the immediate horizon, and many more to follow. As a native of Louisiana, which saw expansion of optometric scope of care signed into law in 2014, I can attest to the absolute “win-win-win” for all stakeholders! And, the efforts of the Optometry Association Of Louisiana to make it happen, the culmination of years of progress. We've been advocating for a seat at the table for People of Color. But we recognize that one seat represents only a single voice. To enact the meaningful change, the Global PAD Association's DEI Patient Advisory Committee aspires to achieve, they have determined it requires more than one-off, token representation. A chorus of diverse voices, reflecting varied backgrounds and socioeconomic perspectives, is essential for authentic and effective change. Designing for a community demands the collective input of that community. I’ve always thought that the “great consolidation” amongst health systems will lead to large regional Kaiser-esque models, where the payors, clinicians, and facilities are integrated. What’s really interesting about Jaewon Ryu’s statement below is he says Geisinger is the “first inaugural member.” That makes me think Risant Health isn’t done, it wasn’t just a singular acquisition, but will be the first of many other “member” organizations that will lead to a huge conglomerate across the nation. What do you think? Am I reading into this too much? Or will Risant rival HCA + UHC in its ability to gain market share through vertical integration of clinical and health plan assets?
