Today is National Healthcare Decisions Day. It's a day that might pass unnoticed by many, but for seniors and their families, it can be one of the most critical waypoints in life's journey. In my work with seniors in South Central Pennsylvania, there's a conversation I've seen make all the difference: advance care planning. It's not just about healthcare. It's about ensuring that the golden years are lived on one's own terms, with dignity and choice. Here's why this day should matter to you: 🔍 Clarity: Advance care planning clarifies your wishes, so your family isn't left guessing. 🛡️ Protection: It protects your rights to receive (or not receive) the kind of care you want. 🤝 Support: It provides support to your family or allies during what can be a stressful decision-making time. 🙏 Peace of Mind: It grants you and everyone involved the irreplaceable peace of mind that comes with knowing there's a plan. But even in the face of these powerful statistics, there is no way to fully articulate just how great their impact is on the happiness of the people who receive care, but also everyone who knows – and all too often takes for granted – the fact that exceptional care is available. The peace of mind that community hospitals provide cannot be overstated. This is one of the many reasons I believe it is so important that we embrace #valuebasedcare that rewards community hospitals for what they naturally strive to achieve – to help entire communities gain greater health. For those with a Tuesday morning commute, this interview is certainly eye opening. One thing about the Steward Health debacle is the sale of the physician group. Rumor has it Optum is poking around in this mess. Patients, nurses, physicians, and communities are probably feeling helpless and out of control as this whole mess unfolds. Physicians and nurses need to go the Massachusetts capitol and make it known that trading a PE disaster for a for profit arm of UHG is not a winning strategy. Keep it local and regional. Hospitals are supposed to be an anchor of healthcare provision in communities. How did we get to this point? Where are we going? Do we keep letting corporate mindsets and greed simply destroy communities and the lives of those who provide the care--namely the nurses, physicians, pharmacists, social workers, techs, and other support staff who signed up for careers to make a difference? PE has no business in healthcare. None.

It's rare I watch or listen to a podcast and am inspired. Remembering the word, "inspire" comes from the root, "in spirit", we can say my inspiration has its roots in love, which is exactly what this podcast speaks to: Love as a guiding principle in the leadership, management, and delivery of excellent healthcare. Apurv Gupta, MD, MPH, Stephanie Feals and guest, Erik Anderson of Adventist Health Castle go deep into the practical application of love in creating the excellence in healthcare delivery that wins a National Baldrige Award. But it's so much more than winning this prestigious award. It's about the love that brings together leadership, staff, patients, families and community. Together we're better, yes? How HCA, Tenet and CHS have grown — or shrunk — over 5 years: Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare operated 186 hospitals by the end of 2023, up from 179 in 2019. Meanwhile, two other large for-profit health systems — Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems and Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare — have trimmed the number of hospitals they operated over that span.  http://dlvr.it/T44PK7
