The traditional city has many archetypal templates for how successful urban development can occur. One of these is the transition from commercial development to adjacent residential. In many instances commercial main streets are backed by transitional multifamily housing, small scale, lower unit count development, that bridges the gap from higher density/ higher scale development on main streets to lower density single family development.
