The National Reconciliation Week theme for 2024 is: Now More Than Ever. Now more than ever, the work continues. In treaty making, in truth-telling, in understanding our history, in education, and in tackling racism. We need connection. We need respect. We need action. And we need change. Now more than ever, we need reconciliation. The dates for NRW remain the same each year; 27 May to 3 June. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey— the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively. National Reconciliation Week (NRW) started as the Week of Prayer for Reconciliation in 1993 (the International Year of the World’s Indigenous Peoples) and was supported by Australia’s major faith communities. Today, National Reconciliation Week is celebrated in workplaces, schools and early learning services, community organisations and groups, and by individuals Australia-wide.

It’s National Reconciliation Week (NRW). This year’s theme, Now More Than Ever, is a reminder to all of us that no matter what, the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will —and must —continue. NRW—held every year from 27 May to 3 June—is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. What’s the significance of 27 May and 3 June? 27 May marks the anniversary of the 1967 referendum when Australians voted to remove clauses in the Australian Constitution that discriminated against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. 3 June marks the historic 1992 Mabo decision in which the High Court of Australia recognised native title—the recognition that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights over their lands did survive British colonisation. The day before National Reconciliation Week, 26 May, is National Sorry Day, which was first held in Sydney in 1998 and is now commemorated nationally to remember and honour the Stolen Generations. We have some NRW celebrations planned for later in the week, stay tuned. Michelle O'Neill has been named the First Minister. This is groundbreaking because she represents Sinn Féin, an Irish nationalist party, marking the first time a nationalist has been positioned to take on the role. The unique power-sharing governance is back on track, which was primarily disrupted due to the Northern Ireland Protocol and other Brexit-related issues, furthering the restoration of the Assembly and the selection of the First Minister. Sinn Féin is often labeled as "hardliner" primarily due to: -Historical Ties: Sinn Féin has historical connections to the IRA, which conducted an armed campaign for Irish reunification. -Irish Reunification: The party's steadfast commitment to achieving a united Ireland, potentially through a referendum, is seen as uncompromising. -Brexit Stance: Sinn Féin's strong opposition to Brexit and its impact on Northern Ireland further solidifies its image as a hardliner within the context of UK and EU politics. Michelle belongs to a family who have a strong republican background, which spans across generations. Her leadership style is noted for being considered and inclusive, aiming to represent all communities within Northern Ireland, be it the unionists or the republicans. Her coming to power as the First Minister is not only significant for O'Neill but also for Northern Ireland, as it reflected a demographic shift towards a Catholic plurality. More on Unionists (Loyalists) and Nationalists (Republicans): The Good Friday Agreement of 1998, which aimed to bring peace to the region after decades of conflict known as "The Troubles," acknowledges these communities and has established power-sharing mechanisms to ensure both communities are represented in the governance of Northern Ireland. Here's a new blog piece from our D&D Fellow, Dr. John Osae-Kwapong. This time, he recalls President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo's March 6 "Our Democracy, Our Pride" speech, in which he urged citizens to be tolerant of competing viewpoints. John shares the same views: "A vibrant civic space where partisan citizens debate with passion important matters of national development should be encouraged as a necessary ingredient for building and sustaining a healthy democracy." The far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) has triumphed in recent state elections in Eastern Germany. While the public and scholarly debate often focuses on party strategies and protecting institutional buffers against democratic erosion, the rise of the far right in Germany and other European countries has severe consequences for civil society organizations, initiatives, and engaged citizens committed to a diverse and democratic society. Far-right parties across Europe are proposing to constrain the legal and financial frameworks supporting these actors. Moreover, democratic spaces are shrinking due to the normalization of far-right actors and ideology. Amongst others, counseling centers for victims of right-wing violence report alarming increases in acts of violence against politicians and activists following the AfD's successes in local and European elections this year. However, civil society is not staying silent. Across Germany, hundreds of thousands have been taking to the streets to defend democracy since the beginning of the year. Examples from countries like Poland also demonstrate that authoritarian and illiberal politics do not spell the end of civic engagement. At the same time, civil society is undergoing structural changes due to the rise of the far right, involving politicization processes within civil society and strong dynamics of mobilization and counter-mobilization. Civil society practitioners and researchers are seeking to understand which strategies work best against the far right and how to protect civil society's power to foster democracy and social cohesion. https://lnkd.in/eFjDjZbK

Independent thought leader inspiring campaign Changing Britain For Good, prioritising The People, supporting development of A Renaissance of Leadership and Hope for everyone’s future
“ENGLAND’S GREEN AND PLEASANT LAND” IN DANGER? Our United Kingdom, and each sovereign nation within it, England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, has a distinctive identity, built upon a heritage of JudaeoChristian principles. These form our culture and customs, are the basis for our systems of justice and governance and are deeply embedded in our language and national consciousness. Other nations will have their particular identity, values and way of life and they expect all who reside there, or seek to become residents, to respect and conform accordingly. Britain has accommodated incomers from its earliest times dating back to Julius Caesar’s 'visit' in 55 BC. As a sovereign nation, Britain is justified in exercising the same rights as other countries do in their expectations. However, successive governments of both the establishment political Parties, with no dissent from the minority ones, dismally have failed to uphold British values and heritage. The results have been catastrophic. Britain needs A People's Parliament comprised of a majority of INDEPENDENT MPs. The chaos caused by the political establishment, propped up the decaying, past-their-shelf-life legacy political parties - Tory, Labour, Lib-Dem, Greens, SNP, Reform et al - is unforgivable. So Dr Chan Abraham is leading the way as the first truly INDEPENDENT MP for Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire and is calling on others to follow suit. The date of the 2024 UK General Election has not been announced but here is one INDEPENDENT who is ready to serve The People. Key information is given below and all who would like to be involved in CHANGING BRITAIN FOR GOOD are invited to make contact. #ChanAbrahamIndependent #ChangingBritainForGood #ChangeBritainForGood #PeoplesParliament #IndependentMPs #exposepolticalcoruption #takebackdemocracy #saveournation #saveourdemocracy Website: https://lnkd.in/e29RSjTD Contact us by email: changebritain4good@gmail.com Register to Vote: https://lnkd.in/dJym4hw6 01480 388017 Huntingdonshire District Council Elections Homepage: https://lnkd.in/dkFh27hn Apply for Voter ID (if you don't have this already): https://lnkd.in/dgYtpwyx Promoted by Chan Abraham contactable at ChangingBritainForGood PO Box 773 HUNTINGDON PE29 9RF Ash Choudhury Andy Kavanagh CQP MCQI TechIOSH MCIHT AIEMA Together Steff Wright GB News Ivor Cummins Leandra Jeram Leandra Ashton Noel Robinson Dr Noël Tredinnick Noel McElwee Sukh Singh Jacqui Deevoy Scott Fortune Morag Foster Pamela Edwards John Caudwell Lee Church Rach Trueman Anna Nuttall Andrew Bridgen Robin Millar

We were part of the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2024 conference on the EU #ChildGuarantee. As members of the EU Alliance for #InvestingInChildren, we urgently urge the EU Member States to honour their political pledge by fully implementing the National Action Plans. These plans must undergo frequent revisions and updates to guarantee they embody a rights-based, comprehensive, and integrated approach. We remain constant in our commitment: we must act decisively to ensure every child thrives. EU leadership can drive policy reform and systemic improvements for European children and youth. Read our joint statement: https://bit.ly/3UHs2mo Let's come together for the well-being of all children!
