Should we be performing #dryeye evaluations on all of our #glaucoma patients? The evidence and my clinical experience certainly lean in that direction. Our OD colleagues, Justin Schweitzer, OD, FAAO and Jennifer Gould Blackmore OD MS FAAO, have a nice paper reviewing the connections between glaucoma and dry eye. At a minimum, consider implementing a questionnaire and point-of-care testing like tear osmolarity and mmp-9 testing on your glaucoma patients. #optometrists #optometry #eyecare https://lnkd.in/giAVF2Kw

Thank you for sharing Kyle Klute OD FAAO Our glaucoma patients often times care more about the way their eyes feel and look, rather than that small nasal step they have on the visual field. I am not discounting real vision loss that can occur with glaucoma, but just as important we need to care about the quality of life aspect many of these patients suffer from on a daily basis.

One of the most telling things to me is the statement from the draft upcoming American Optometric Association upcoming CPG on glaucoma (I will wait until the final version to quote it) but based on that, the answer is a resounding yes.

I find that a lot of my SLT referrals and for glaucoma patients with dry eye and it’s a fantastic step for managing both diseases: less BAK exposure for the ocular surface and treatment of glaucoma without compliance risk. I also like the duality of omega 3 supplementation to help with both conditions
