Did you know that unconscious biases could be stealing the best talent away from you? 🤔 Understanding these biases is crucial, it allows employers to address them so they can build inclusive teams and create equal opportunities. Robert Half UK's Black Employee Network (BEN) arranged a webinar featuring black history educator and cultural theorist, Kayne Kawasaki. As we celebrate #BlackInclusionWeek, I want to share a powerful piece written by a fantastic colleague of mine, Jason Dunwell, that underscores the significance of this vital initiative. It’s a week dedicated to amplifying Black voices, challenging our biases, and taking actionable steps towards a more inclusive society. You really need to read the article for yourself, but some key highlights to point out include: ➡ The work of Jason's hero; historian and presenter David Olusoga, who sheds light on the UK’s history of racism and colonialism, reminding us that understanding our country's past (and the role this plays in the marginalisation of Black people today) is key to shaping a more equitable future. ➡ The media’s role in shaping perceptions and the need for critical engagement with the narratives presented to us. ➡ The impact of our daily, casual conversations in either reinforcing stereotypes or contributing to a culture of inclusivity. There is a vast body of research on the racism, discrimination and inequitable treatment faced by racialized staff. This attitude persists despite the efforts of diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. As human resources professionals, it is part of our responsibility to guide the process of eradicating discrimination and prejudice, whether conscious or unconscious, and, in so doing, to encourage the inclusion of all employees.  Acknowledging and celebrating employees' racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds can be an effective way of reinforcing psychological safety and employee commitment. Celebrating Black History Month in the workplace is an excellent way to achieve this. Who's educating your workforce on Juneteenth and how to be allies at work? Is it only your Black employees? Who's ensuring LGBTQIAA+ people are safe and welcome, not just during Pride Month but every month? Only your LGBTQIAA+ employees? It can't just be them. Marginalized groups are usually smaller than the majority. They need allies. We call out the 'leadership tactic' of making marginalized folks do the heavy lifting. That's just piling on extra, unpaid labor. And let me tell you, that ain't equity. Real talk: We need to listen and learn from these groups without exploiting them further. It's time for allies to step up and do the work. We have to choose to step up today for people who aren't just like us. That's how we rewrite these workplace rules, y'all. It's March 1. You may be thinking I'm late in posting for #BlackHistoryMonth, but I would challenge that. Should the conversation surrounding the challenges and celebration of our Black community end at midnight on February 29 (or 28 on non leap years)? All too often companies and brands jump on the opportunity to strategically market their allyship and then disappear until February 1 of the following year. I choose not to use voice throughout my #BlackHistoryMonth content throughout the month for two reasons: 1) When it comes to this subject, it's better for me as an Italian, caucasian man to listen rather than speak and 2) Elevating the voices of Black professionals and EID experts bettering the infrastructure industry needs to take precedence. I hope you found the content I reshared this month as insightful as I did. There's no secret, that the most successful and efficient teams have the most diverse backgrounds.
