When I left Corporate America 3 years ago, I personally felt that it wasn’t a final “goodbye,” but more a “might see ya later!” In the past year I have contemplated how it would look if I had a full time job AND owned a small business. I know several successful franchise owners that have serious full time jobs, so it is feasible. The first time I went for a role I didn’t even get an interview because I had Business Owner AND a full time job on my resume. I. Was. Pissed. Once I cooled my jets, I realized I was fortunate they weren’t interested: that is not the type of company I want to work for. It also made me realize that I have an entire team of slashies. A slashie is a person who has multiple jobs, aka a side hustler. My team is comprised of 20+ women and working for me is their side hustle! They work for my company because they are passionate about the brand, the workout, the stress release, the community, etc. Their full time jobs consist of healthcare professionals, school teachers, marketing professionals, sales, students, grad students and more. These women show up 363 days a year, for early mornings and late evenings, all while juggling full time jobs, school, families and more. So when I hear a Hiring Manager say, “we want someone only focused on our role,” respectfully, you’re short sighted. Hiring Managers, if you want to hire a hard-worker with drive and ambition AND their skillset includes prioritizing and strategic thinking, consider a slashie.

You can’t beat the competition by copying them. Hiring over 30+ people in my career one of my biggest recommendations for companies wanting to innovate is hire outside of your industry. When you hire internal to your industry it might be a quicker onboarding, but it also quickly creates echo chambers. Stop with the job postings that say x # of years in beauty, sports, tech, CPG. This applies to all departments, but especially social media. When changing careers, the hardest part for me as I searched for a job was finding target companies. I felt so lost. “How do I know who would be good to work for?” “What if the companies I like don’t have openings?” “Which Glassdoor review should I believe?” “What if I pick one that looks good on the outside but turns out is rotting on the inside?” “Would in-office be better for me and my family or remote?” “How can I effectively evaluate the product(s) and/or service(s) they sell?” “Do I want to sell tech/software or something more tangible?” Felt like there were too many unknowns to make smart decisions about the companies I should target. The solution? Have as many conversations with as many people as you can, asking what’s important to you. Lots of folks liked helping me, I bet you can find some too. Ask!
