Navigating the world of business awards can be complex, and a common question we encounter is: What's the difference between entering an award and being nominated for one? Entering an Award ➡️ This is a proactive approach where you take the reins. You search for suitable awards, adhere to deadlines, and prepare your submission, answering a series of questions and providing evidence of your excellence. It’s your chance to showcase your achievements and make a compelling case for why you deserve to win. Being Nominated ➡️ On the other hand, being nominated for an award is a recognition that comes to you. Anyone from your professional circle can put your name forward because they believe in your excellence and think you deserve the accolade. It’s a wonderful form of external validation, and while it might not require a submission process on your part initially, you may be contacted for further information or to confirm your nomination. Both paths are valuable and can lead to incredible recognition for you and your business. There are many reasons to give out awards to recognize people and organizations for their accomplishments. The question is: what type of award meets the occasion. Here is where I can help with the selection as there are hundreds of options and price points. Make sure the award you give is memorable and tells the story of their accomplishment. You want it displayed and for the recipient to be proud to receive it. I have ideas, give me a call for your award program.

Last Friday, my department was honoured with an award for the 2023 business year, and a few of the remarks we've gotten so far from other staff include: "Why would the management give you guys this award?" "You people know you didn't earn this award." "What actions have you taken to qualify for this award? My printer still does not work. Blah, blah, blah." 😀 Over time, from my experience working in IT, I've learnt that very few people realise the complexities of IT, which is why the job is thankless. As my Head of IT Abayomi Soge would say, “How do you know the IT field is for you? Your love for seeing business continue smoothly after a hitch, along with your empathy and joy in resolving a frustrated user’s problem, should supersede your desire for endorsement.” I enjoy working in IT. When everything works properly, everyone asks, "Why do we pay these guys?" But as soon as something goes offline, they ask, "Why do we even pay these guys?" Lol. On the contrary, it feels nice to know the management thinks differently and that I was part of the team that achieved this honour. Next stop is first place.

Certainly, the value of an award can be influenced by several factors: 1. **Reputation of the Giver**: Awards given by well-known and respected organizations or individuals carry more weight. The reputation of the awarding body can enhance the prestige of the award. 2. **Credentials of the Receiver**: The recipient's achievements and standing in their field can also impact the perceived value of the award. Accomplished and renowned individuals receiving an award can enhance its prestige. 3. **Past Recipients**: The list of previous awardees can affect the award's value. If past recipients are highly regarded, it can elevate the status of the award. 4. **Whether the Award is for Sale**: If an award can be bought rather than earned through merit, its value diminishes. Awards that are seen as genuine recognitions of achievement are more respected than those perceived as purchasable.

The #SCA awards in Victoria have been opened for nominations re: #stratamanagement . There will always be a debate over the value of an award and the energy dedicated to the process. Winning an award looks great on a new business proposal and company website, an email signature and the individual awards are an amazing recognition of staff. And the awards SHOULD count for something. But how do we make them count for more WITHIN the industry? Many business operators I’ve spoken with lean towards being dissuaded in participating because of the trending correlation between state board members and the winners each year. And this happens in various states. Several also don’t like the poaching that appears to happen following an award. It’s hard to say why staff leave and it’s not really anybody’s business to be honest. But the crazy surge of contact after the awards each year is definitely a thing. And perhaps most frustrating is the lack of transparency and questions of conflict surrounding the voting. Suppliers who receive work facilitated by management companies have votes on the award submissions, with no visibly disclosed conflicts. Those same suppliers sponsor the SCA and mingle with the parties that they vote upon, deciding who wins what award. This is the sort of post that doesn’t get a tonne of engagement because of perception within the #strata community that associating with the post paints a target on your back within SCA circles. At least that is what people message me - fear of retribution. Thankfully, there’s an easy fix for most of this - make the submissions public, and the voting too. If that means less proprietary information is included, that’s fine. That information shouldn’t be privy to voting panels anyway. It always tends to leak, breaking commercial confidence - a fascinating game of Chinese-whispers from primary school. But I digress… There are I don’t know how many management companies in Victoria. Let’s say 2-300 of those are genuine (presuming we count franchises individually as the awards do). Why is it that so few submit for the awards? Once again, sometimes math is just math. Sam Osborne and Susan Chandler are going to put on a fantastic event this year. Let’s support that more. #ownerscorporation #bodycorporate #property

“I haven’t seen you posting much about DEI recently…everything ok?” 👀 
A very kind person messaged me this last week and it made me both sad and happy. Happy that content around DEI in our industry is expected from me, that i’ve been able to create a space for safe conversation around what can be a difficult topic and that people have found that useful. ❤️ But also sad. Sad that it still feels like I have to push so hard to get certain events/brands/people to recognise the importance of talking about DEI and creating lasting action off the back of it. Sad that there are still so few conversations happening. Sad at the lack of entries into the DEI awards I recently judged for our industry. So now I need to take action. 👏🏽 At Accountex London I gave a talk called “THE Practical Guide to DEI in 2024” that was packed with practical things accountants & bookkeepers could do to improve diversity, equity and inclusion within their firms whether they were a trainee or a partner/director. What’s an award worth these days? In the age of participation trophies and endless accolade inflation, it seems like everyone has a shiny statue to show off. But let’s be honest, do these awards truly represent excellence, or are they just another checkbox in the race for recognition? Don’t get me wrong, being acknowledged feels great, but when every other post is about yet another ‘industry award,’ it makes you wonder about the real value behind these honors. Are they driving genuine innovation and setting industry standards, or simply boosting egos and marketing campaigns? Maybe it’s time we shift our focus from collecting accolades to creating real impact. After all, true success isn’t measured by the number of trophies on your shelf, but by the difference you make and the legacy you leave behind. #IndustryThoughts #RealImpact #BeyondAwards
