We've been advocating for a seat at the table for People of Color. But we recognize that one seat represents only a single voice. To enact the meaningful change, the Global PAD Association's DEI Patient Advisory Committee aspires to achieve, they have determined it requires more than one-off, token representation. A chorus of diverse voices, reflecting varied backgrounds and socioeconomic perspectives, is essential for authentic and effective change. Designing for a community demands the collective input of that community. Therefore, instead of inviting only one or two patients to come to you, our DEI Committee made up of nearly two dozen Patients of Color (and growing), invite you to "Come To Our Table", where we can amplify the collective voice of the community, fostering true inclusivity and the change we all want to see. It is incredibly exciting to see Selena Gomez's Rare Beauty leading the charge toward inclusivity and accessibility in the beauty industry! 💄✨ Their commitment to making makeup more user-friendly for individuals with fine motor impairments is truly commendable. As an occupational therapy doctoral student, who engages in the occupation (what OTs refer to as an "ADL", or activity of daily living) of makeup application and removal, I'm passionate about advocating for products that recognize the importance of makeup for everyone who wears it - as it is a meaningful form of self-expression and empowerment! By prioritizing inclusivity, Rare Beauty is not only setting a powerful example but also paving the way for other companies to follow suit in their product development. In 2017, National Physicians Week highlighted the shortage of physicians in the United States against a growing landscape of minorities joining the ranks. "In hindsight, I am proud of what we have accomplished in a short period of time, including raising the recognition of our group and spotlighting the years of sacrifice by those in our profession to serve our patients. We are poised to initiate actionable efforts to engage and educate our physician community." Dr. Kimberly Funches Jackson, President. Every day, dedicated doctors 🧑⚕️provide quality care🩺 in every part of the country twenty-four hours a day. Whether it is in an emergency room in Idaho or delivering a newborn🤱 in the suburbs of Philadelphia, a physician listens to symptoms, watches for signs, analyzes and consults to make, with the patient, the best decisions their years of training and dedication can provide. She shares her experience below:   "The day was packed with insightful sessions that highlighted the importance of integrating patient engagement early in research, understanding patient preferences, and leveraging innovative solutions to reduce patient burdens. These discussions were not only informative but also inspiring, showcasing how a collaborative effort can shape a more inclusive and efficient future for clinical trials. It was an honour for me to take part in an important session on 'Debunking Myths to Advance Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in Clinical Trials'. Our incredible panel of patients & professionals underlined the crucial role of diversity in clinical trials, emphasizing how diverse populations can help accelerate medicine development and significantly improve access, inclusivity, and health equity for all patients.    This experience reinforced the vital role that patient advocacy plays in advancing healthcare. By turning patient insights into actionable strategies, we can ensure that clinical research is more representative and beneficial for all communities. A huge thank you to COUCH Health, The Conference Forum, and SAIA for providing me with this incredible opportunity to connect with industry leaders and fellow advocates. My first DIA conference was a fantastic experience. I loved the variety of sessions and topics covered. It was made more fun with the opportunity to spend some time with Maria Healey! We got to catch up as friends and brainstorm some ideas for Firak Consulting Group.   Below are my top 5 takeaways from #DIA2024: 1) Instead of only focusing on how to increase diversity in clinical trials, what if as an industry we focused on running more effective studies, full stop. Making long-lasting changes to the clinical trial system will make it more inclusive. 2) DEI budgets are still lacking. Diversity is not study specific but the budgets are. How do we get more internal investment to meaningfully solve the challenges of inclusive enrollment? 3) How do we approach equity in the context of the time we live in today? How can we invest in making accessing healthcare easier for everyone, instead of just focusing on reaching underresourced communities? This was discussed during an all patient and caregiver panel, which was a first for DIA! 4) People don't screen fail. The trial isn't a match for them. Our words matter. Changing the screen fail verbiage may encourage people to find a trial that is a match for them. This was from one of my favorite sessions of the conference about how to reduce shame and blame in healthcare and clinical trial settings. 5) There is no such thing as good data without patient engagement. Conversely, there is no such thing as good patient engagement without data. How do we as patient engagement and patient advocacy professionals compliantly publish more about insights from our communities? You'll notice many of the learnings are still questions we have to answer as an industry. And I'm hopeful that every day we get a little closer to these answers! #PatientAdvocacy #PatientEngagement #ClinicalTrials #PatientInclusivity
