Wow 😍 Just Wow 🤗 One whole year of Inara 😯 I can’t actually believe it and what a journey it has been already. I would never have done this without Toby Wilman & Jason Ouston so personally I will be forever grateful for their commitment to starting Inara. As much as I am sure we annoy each other secretly, the balance between us three just works so well. It just flows. 💁♀️ How has the first year been…. 👉 Exciting + Scary 👉 Enjoyable + Mundane 👉 Hard + Easy 👉 Expected + Unexpected Probably all of these and more at the same time over and over. Setting up a business is hard but also easy when you do it with people you trust and you actually enjoy the job you do. I’ve certainly learnt a lot and I know there is still so much to learn as we continue to grow the business. Which is the whole point of doing this right? Firstly I know we are just so grateful to everyone who has trusted us and worked with us and continues to do so. Wrapped up my first week at Explori and it's been a fantastic start! I've jumped right into learning about our projects, and it's been exciting to learn the ropes and see how things operate from the inside. My first tip from my first week is to ask questions! Don't hesitate to ask questions, no matter how small or big. It’s the quickest way to learn and get up to speed. Especially ask questions about the business in whole so you have a comprehensive understanding of all the operations. My next tip is to build relationships! Take the time to introduce yourself to colleagues and learn about their roles. It helps to understand the bigger picture and creates a strong network from day one. I was treated to lunch with Chloe Richardson and Lauren Martingell which gave us the perfect opportunity on my first day to get to know eachother and feel incredibly welcome. (Thank you both!) Next tip is a given but stay organised! Don't wait until you are given a project to execute a few weeks in to then start implementing self organisation. Starting from day one when you are learning lots of new information quickly as it will help you build a good working routine and schedule. There’s a lot of new information coming at you quickly, so keeping notes and staying organised is key to staying on top of everything. Last tip is to embrace the company culture. Every company has its own culture—observe, participate, and embrace it. It helps you settle in faster and makes the experience more enjoyable. My Journey from Academia to the Corporate World: This is my first LinkedIn post, and I feel it’s a good time to share my humble thoughts on this topic. After my PhD, I took a bold step and joined Linde Malaysia as a Sales Executive in November 2022. Many asked, "Why sales after a PhD?" Initially, these comments gave me pause, but I forged ahead. Now, I can say it’s one of the best decisions of my life. Sales is a battlefield where titles hold little weight; what matters is your service and convincing customers of your product's value. This environment teaches resilience and the importance of character and attitude. A PhD is an advantage in sales, especially with technically-minded customers. Discussing complex details builds trust and credibility, skills honed during my PhD. Every research project harbours untapped commercial potential. As a PhD, you excel at transforming intricate ideas into marketable solutions—an essential skill for business growth. It's not merely about technical expertise; it's about charting the course to commercialization and bringing ideas to life. In sales, you hone the art of selling products, a skill essential for commercializing every concept. Many PhDs shy away from sales roles due to misplaced "shame" or prestige concerns, and some companies fear overqualification. This is a missed opportunity. More often than not, PhDs are dedicated, not geniuses. Corporates should not pedestalize PhDs excessively, nor should PhDs. Your PhD title will be appreciated in the corporate world, yes! Respect is earned through contributions and impact, and colleagues and even customers will recognize your qualifications, often calling you "Dr." In conclusion, joining a corporate role after a PhD is rewarding. It pushes you out of your comfort zone, enhances practical skills, and applies academic insights in real-world scenarios.
