I spent some time at our IMG Citrus packing facility in Vero Beach. In this video we are bagging fresh Florida grapefruit in the Happy Food brand for retailers including Walmart, Publix, Kroger, Aldi and others. In addition to great taste, freshness and sustainably grown, our goal is to reduce the cost of food. This means reducing waste throughout the supply chain. One key link in this chain is the packaging process. Here we are using state of the art bagging machines from Grup Giró. These baggers are running at 53 bags per minute however our actual production rate comes out to 25 bags per minute which is less than 50% of potential. In order to improve our utilization rate we start by observing the work to quantify the down-time or non-value-added-time in the process. I spent 88 minutes observing the process and recorded 24 minutes of down-time: 2 x 1 minute - weighting error 6 minute - bag jam 4.5 minute - refill netting roll 3.5 minute - replace HDPE film roll 2 x 1 Minute - refill film roll 6 minute - print-and-apply error Once we know what is causing down-time we can focus on minimizing it. This helps us reduce costs and pass savings on to the consumer. If we do this at each step of the supply chain we can significantly reduce the cost of food. Combine this with our focus on regenerative agricultural practices which increase the nutrient density of the food (by enriching the soil), and we can significantly reduce the cost of nutrition or cost per nutrient value. The bottom line is food should be cheap, nutritious and fresh.
