Are you familiar with the "Ferrari" of espresso machines? La Marzocco, part of the De'Longhi Group, was founded in 1927 in Italy and is a brand synonymous with quality and reliability. They have delivered innovations through the years that later became industry standards. Starbucks used La Marzocco machines from 1990 to 2005 until they switched to superautomatic machines. In a 2007 memo by Howard Schultz to then-CEO Jim Donald, he said: "For example, when we went to automatic espresso machines, we solved a major problem in terms of speed of service and efficiency. At the same time, we overlooked the fact that we would remove much of the romance and theatre that was in play with the use of the La Marzocca machines." Today, La Marzocco has been merged with Eversys and is owned by the De'Longhi Group, the Italian giant in small appliances. For 2023, La Marzocco had an adjusted EBITDA margin of 24% compared to 14% for the whole De'Longhi Group. The combined entity of La Marzocco and Eversys had revenues of €372M compared to the De'Longhi Group's €3.1B.
