Today is Earth Day. If you're like me, every day is a day to celebrate the earth and all that she provides for us. From the abundance of fruit and veggies that grow as our food, the beauty of the variety of flora and fauna, or the vast array of natural resources that help us build our homes and industries. We are made up of the elements that come from nature, you could say we loan them the earth, and one day we will return it all back to the earth again. Nothing is really ours to take and yet we have forgotten this principal. We have to give to receive, for everything we take we must replenish. The earth has given too much. And humanity have taken too much. The past few weeks I have spent a lot of time reflecting on nature and the earth, visiting Kew Gardens last weekend, and going on a long stomp with my hike club on Saturday. I also visited the BURTYNSKY exhibition at the Saatchi gallery which dives deep into the impact humanity is having on the planet, through the most incredible aerial photography. The exhibition reinforced my belief that it is necessary to create real lasting change, especially in the events industry which is known for being quite wasteful. And while I might not be saving the world in my day to day role as Supplier & Sustainability Lead at Sleek Events, I do sense a combination of passion for the earth, and love of this industry can make a lasting impact, even if starting with the smallest incremental steps. It's a journey afterall. We're in the process of measuring the emissions of our biggest event of the year. It's a lengthy process that requires support from all our suppliers. 🌍 Italy's Overshoot Day: reflecting on our environmental footprint! 🗓 Yesterday, May 19th, marked Italy's Overshoot Day. This signifies that we have depleted all the ecological resources our country can regenerate for the year. For the rest of 2024, we are maintaining our ecological deficit by drawing down local resource stocks and accumulating carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. In essence, we are operating in overshoot. 💥 Reaching Overshoot Day just 140 days into the year underscores the urgency to change the status quo and embrace increasingly sustainable and circular practices. However, Italy is not alone in depleting available resources. Twenty other countries have already reached this negative milestone, including Qatar, Luxembourg, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States of America. If all countries followed suit, we would need about three planet Earths to sustain such consumption levels. But we only have one! The summer show season is almost here! I just finalized my registration for OutDoor by ISPO, and I couldn't be more excited to head to Munich in June. This will be my first time at the show, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the mix of product categories compares to our usual shows in the US. I'm also particularly interested to see some of the sustainability solutions at this show that I may not normally get exposure to. If you'll be at the show, let's meet up. Otherwise, I'm sure I'll have many takeaways to share afterward, so don't hesitate to reach out if you want to hear about it. P.S. This picture is from a fly fishing & bikepacking trip back in 2018. We didn't go particularly far or catch many fish, but the combination of passions made the trip more memorable than most. Maybe this is unfounded, but the summer season seems to include more cross-category use cases that give new excitement to core outdoor activities. Or maybe I'm just biased from living in a warm climate... thoughts? #ispo #outdoorindustry #productdesign
