Equity. Access to information is a form of equity. Period. Corey Squire, AIA and Practice of Architecture's Evelyn Lee dig into this topic around the 28:30 minute mark of this week's Practice Disrupted episode: "A big piece of equity is access to information. Because when some people have access to information and others don't, there's a power imbalance. It doesn't have to be intentional. It could be completely accidental." For example, I often ask firms I speak with what the likelihood is of the firm hiring someone new before the end of the year? How will this new employee access a critical firmwide communication shared yesterday or key essential information they need to do their new job? Corey says, "Once you place it on the intranet, and it's searchable and it's discoverable... and maybe you even hint about it or post about it...if people can access that information that explains the privileges they have that they can then reference and leverage - huge benefit, huge leveling of the playing field of the entire firm regardless of either seniority or level of confidence asking for things. So I think a lot of the discussion around transparency (in building and implementing their Synthesis intranet knowledge base) was couched through this idea of equity."

H2M’s Senior Vice President and Director of Private Sector Architecture, Kevin Paul, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, CFM, recently offered his insights to Long Island Business News for an article on how architects overcome the design challenges posed by climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic through creativity and innovation. These challenges include designing structures that address future climate and weather events, which are often unprecedented and unpredictable. For example, buildings may have to be designed with flooding resiliency in mind, even in areas that have not typically been subject to heavy floodwaters in the past. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way interior spaces are designed, pushing architects to be more creative about how they address public health concerns without disrupting the open flow of spaces that are often limited in their square footage.
