Steven and Stephen became friends when they first met at a training in the LAHH office. Stephen, on the right, was the 3rd employee hired at LAHH in 2008. Steven, on the left, started in 2014. They were not the most talkative in class, but they had stuff on their minds to share afterwards which elicited a joy and smile that is infectious. We can’t be around them without smiling. As happened during the pandemic, changes were necessary to respond to the new world of cleaning. Steven and Stephen wound up on the same team. They enjoy each other’s friendship so much, that they meet before work and its beautiful to see! Good friendships can positively impact a person’s health and well-being. For people with disabilities, making friends and having peers respect you, is not always the case. Therefore, we celebrate the power of friendship! #InclusiveEmployment #Friendship

🌟 This week in the CDERP Glide In program, our incredible kids continued their journey of discovery! They identified key skills from a list, wrote them on sticky notes, and shared them with their classmates. It was heartwarming to see everyone sifting through the messages to find the skills that best reflect their strengths and could be useful in future job roles. 😊 At the same time, our CDERP Work First clients are busy exploring their unique employment pathways. Whether it’s retail, the trades, or academic pursuits for higher-level careers, they are focusing on their strengths and interests to build meaningful futures. 💼✨ We’re excited to announce that one of our Work First clients has just secured employment with Ozpax in Kilsyth! 🎉 This is a fantastic example of customised employment in action, as we help individuals find roles that align with their unique strengths and interests. 🙌 This week, Phil attended several networking events to broaden our reach, spreading the message of customised employment. We connected with like-minded organisations and employers who share our vision of inclusive workplaces. Customised employment offers tailored opportunities based on an individual’s skills and passions, leading to higher job satisfaction and success compared to traditional disability employment services. 🌟 Phil also spoke at Eastside Recovery Centre to a fantastic group of clients attending the program, all eager to return to the workforce soon. It was great to connect with people so motivated to find meaningful employment! 🙌 We also marked RU OK? Day by holding a wellbeing check-in with some of our staff. It was a great reminder that ensuring the mental health and wellbeing of everyone—clients and staff alike—keeps us all on the right path. 💛 #CDERP #CDERPGlideIn #CDERPWorkFirst #RUOKDay #Wellbeing #EmploymentJourney #SkillBuilding #Support #Networking #InclusiveWorkplaces #CustomisedEmployment #LikeMinded #JobSatisfaction #EastsideRecovery #Ozpax #NDIS

In honor of Social Work Month, I wanted to recognize the qualities I appreciate when it comes to amazing social work candidates... . . . . . . 🤗Empathy: A good social work candidate demonstrates a deep sense of empathy towards others, exemplified by their desire to help every type of patient and their commitment to seeing individuals in a state facility as people rather than just inmates. They actively listen to their clients, understanding their experiences and needs with genuine compassion. 📖Open-mindedness: They exhibit an open-minded approach, refusing to confine themselves to rigid categories or limitations. This quality enables them to engage with diverse populations and respond flexibly to the unique circumstances and challenges faced by each individual they encounter. They are willing to learn from their clients' experiences and perspectives, continuously adapting their approach to best meet their needs. 🎇Passion and Initiative: A good social work candidate is driven by a genuine passion for making a positive difference in the lives of others. They proactively seek opportunities to help anyone they can, demonstrating a strong sense of initiative and commitment to their profession. They are not only motivated by the desire to assist others but also actively reflect on their own experiences and continually seek ways to improve their skills and effectiveness as a social worker. #socialworkmonth #socialworker #recruitment #recruitmentalley

Something we've been in need of since yesterday: a legit course in Schools and Companies on managing communication specific to (but not limited to): - Anyone returning to work after maternity/paternity leave - Team members managing grief/trauma/loss - People returning to work after a planned/unplanned break - A potential hire who was laid off - People who are learning more about their sexuality - Someone who has made a recent career transition - Under confident folks with phenomenal journeys Yup, this post has had me being on the receiving end of some pathetically phrased questions IRL. And no, this shouldn't be restricted only to your People/HR teams. #hiring #peopleandculture #beingkind

Reasonable Accommodation is any change to the application or hiring process, to the job, to the way the job is done, or to the work environment that allows a person with a disability who is qualified for the job to perform the essential functions of that job and enjoy equal employment opportunities. A guide dog is an example of reasonable accommodation; others include restructuring a job, modifying work schedules, and acquiring or modifying equipment. #EmploymentDisabilityResources #DisabilityInclusion #BreakingBarriers #PromoteInclusion #ReasonableAccommodation

When seeking alignment and buy-in from the business, I try to mitigate these things by giving some of examples on an appropriate approach to implementation, encourage questions that may be offensive or inappropriate. I much rather filter through the ignorance than have an employee who has a disability have to do so while navigating the essential functions of their role.
Accommodations aren’t beneficial if your supervisor, leader, or coworkers ✨constantly point them out as an inconvenience ✨ blatantly ignore them and find ways around them. ✨ use them against you, for example if your accommodation is a different start time and they make comments like, “Well, you can’t even see clients before 9am so you shouldn’t be in this role.” ✨guilt you into getting rid of them for the convenience of the org ✨ claim to be inclusive to disabled folks but actively create an environment that reinforces they are an inconvenience. Accommodations are only as good as the culture and teams supporting them. They are a legal requirement but that doesn’t mean orgs are upholding them. Contact me for workshops and trainings that can interrupt ableism in your workplace. The first step is recognizing how you may be upholding ableist ideas and practices. I want to support you in supporting your disabled teammates!
