Most first aid certificates last for 3 years, during which time your first aid skills and knowledge will inevitably fade, potentially with serious consequences.  As a result it is strongly recommended that you attend an annual update to refresh the emergency topics and receive any protocol updates. As a Suicide First Aid Associate Trainer, the first of the three core principles we teach is “Most people thinking of suicide don’t want their lives to end, they want the pain to stop”. So, what’s the connection between that as part of SFA training and the book Writing On The Wall by @MadeleinePelling. It is an historical account of eighteenth-century life in Britain, through the eyes of those using graffiti to leave their mark. It is a good read and at times amusing some of the verses left on glass, wood, plasterwork or stone. I didn’t know at the time, however there is a section in the book with an account related to suicide. Briefly, John Doe worked in the pottery industry and after mixed fortunes ended up in Bristol spending his last days in the attic of an uninhabited abandoned tenement building before being found in the River Avon. Coroners verdict “Death by Drowning”. Curiosity of the Parish Constable led to further investigation who eventually stumbled across the tenement building and the attic where John Doe lived out his last days. His discovery, walls covered in writing, charting the last days of his life, with dates written under most verses giving the timeline of those final days. Of all the verses written, there are a couple that really stand out for me: “...if there is pardon for suicide, may the intercession of the Lamb procure that pardon for me…” but the one that brings the story right up to date: “...they may instruct the gentlemen of the jury to bring in their verdict of felo de se [suicide]…It is nothing but distress brings me to this rash act”. THE VALUE OF FIRST AID EDUCATION AT ANY AGE It is crucial that in an emergency situation, everybody, including children has the confidence to act. Emergencies happen unannounced. It can happen at work, at home, in school or in public, and it is important that everyone can recognize and respond calmly at such times. Here are major reasons why first aid education is valuable: 1. First aid does more than save lives. First aid can decrease recovery time and may determine between a temporary or permanent disability. Without prompt first aid, several patients will worsen faster and providing it will stabilize them before emergency services arrive. You will become a valuable link in the patient’s chain of survival. 2. First aid training boosts your confidence. Taking a basic first aid training course and understanding what is involved provides you with the confidence to respond effectively in both an emergency situation, and in non-medical situations. It is said that for every minute without CPR, survival rate decreases by 10% in a person with cardiac arrest. I gave a seminar presentation on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation earlier this week! To a group of students of the college. Supervisors and examiners graded my presentation but I consider it a pleasure to have impacted this knowledge. I ensured to include a live demonstration of CPR to better enhance learning. First Aid/ CPR is a skill every body should acquire. It is better to have this skill even if you don't ever get to use it, than to be in a situation where you need it but don't have it. The incident of Junior Pope's death and the social media faze following it may have died down but the need for basic first aid skills still remains. What's stopping you from learning it today? A thorough Training Needs Analysis (TNA) can save time and lots of money - if it's done right! A primary school recently asked me for a 3 day First Aid at Work course. I said "no problem" "why?" To which they replied "that's what we've always had." So I carried out a Training Needs Analysis. The conclusion was they only needed the 1 day Emergency First Aid at Work course. We built this into a Paediatric First Aid Course. As primary schools need both certificates. The business manager was delighted. I saved them over £1200!! Plus 2 days staff wages for 12 people. I will not sell a product to a business, if they don't need it.
