Safety messages from Erie County Department of Health (ECDOH) & @Erie County Department of Homeland Security & Emergency Services as potentially damaging winds come to Western New York and Erie County tomorrow (Tuesday, January 9) and Wednesday morning (Jan. 10). These winds may cause scattered power outages. Road and Vehicle Safety: 🚦 If a traffic light is out, treat it as a four-way stop. Go through the intersection with caution. ⚡️ Always assume power lines are live. NEVER drive over downed wires. If you are driving in an area with downed trees or utility poles, slow down, scan the road and stay away from any debris that may be caught in a downed wire. Prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: ✔ Never use a generator inside your home or garage, even if doors and windows are open. ✔ Only use generators outside, more than 20 feet away from your home, doors, and windows. ❌ Don’t heat your house with a gas oven. Seek immediate medical help if you suspect CO poisoning and are feeling dizzy, light-headed, or nauseated. Thunderstorms during summer months can result in severe weather and unique hazards. When a storm watch or warning is issued, immediately seek shelter indoors and stay inside for 30 minutes after the last sound of thunder. Remember to: - Check the weather forecast when planning your day. - Monitor the skies and listen for thunder. - Get to a safe place, stay indoors. - Do not handle electrical equipment - use battery-operated appliances only. - If on water, get to shore as quickly as possible. - If caught outdoors and cannot find shelter, stay away from tall objects. It's important to stay safe during bad weather. Here are some tips to help protect yourself: ✅ Stay Informed: Keep an eye on weather updates through reliable sources like weather apps, radio, or television. ✅Prepare an Emergency Kit: Include essentials like water, non-perishable food, flashlight, batteries, first aid supplies, medications, and important documents. ✅Stay Indoors: If possible, stay inside a sturdy building. Avoid going outside unless absolutely necessary. ✅Secure Outdoor Items: Bring in or secure items like patio furniture, grills, and trash cans that could become projectiles in strong winds. ✅Avoid Flooded Areas: Never drive or walk through flooded areas. Just a few inches of moving water can knock you down, and one foot of water can sweep your vehicle away. ✅Have a Plan: Know where to go for shelter and how to get there quickly. Inform family or friends about your whereabouts. ✅Charge Devices: Keep your mobile devices charged and have backup power sources if possible. ✅Stay Away from Windows: During high winds, stay in the innermost part of your home, away from windows and glass doors. Stay safe! #CarinaPH
